WASHINGTON (AP) Hope dimming for a broad debt-limit deal, Congress and the White House scrambled Wednesday to salvage deficit-reduction talks while top congressional Republicans said the nation cannot afford to default on its obligations for economic reasons and their party's own good.
Ahead of a fourth negotiating session at the White House in as many days, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell defended his proposal to give President Barack Obama new powers to increase the nation's borrowing limit without GOP support.
"I refuse to help Barack Obama get re-elected by marching Republicans into a position where we have co-ownership of a bad economy," McConnell said on a radio talk show, contending that letting the nation go into financial default would give Obama reason to blame Republicans for the negative fallout.
House Speaker John Boehner added his own warning against default, even as he expressed frustration with the White House over its role in negotiations to trim long-term federal deficits.

Sounds like boner and McConnell are caving.
If the debt limit is raised, the GOP will cease to exist.
Yup, a couple of real dumba$$.
Yep, the beginning of the end.
Baloney! Boehner isn’t caving, he can’t. He could not get Obama’s deal through the House even if he wanted to, and he doesn’t want to.
If the whimpy pantywaists are going to ultimately cave anyhow, I wish they’d just bend over and grab their ankles on Day-One, and spare us all the bullhockey of their talking big and beating their chests for several months before they DO what they probably intended in their hearts to do right from the Get-Go!
Just before I was kicked off Lucianne, I posted a long post asking why our guys always have weird names. Gingrich, Boehner. Such easy names to demonize.
This was before most conservatives knew Boehner was a limp-wristed fag.
Were they really born with these names? It sometimes seems like just another part of the intricate setup we face.
Yeppers.
Of course we can’t afford to default. It’s business as usual, for these hacks on both sides.
Why should you expect anything but this kind of action from classroom bureaucrats and their union?
The root of the problem is our socialized school system. We need to totally do away with it and replace it with a capitalist system.
Get the government out of the schools.
I dont think they quite understand the gravity of the situation - it is better to default on our own terms rather than have it on someone else’s terms.
Third Party Conservative anyone?
Baloney! Boehner isnt caving
Of course he isn’t. Just like the GOP, when they had all 3 branches spent like drunken sailors, as well. During the Bush years, the GOP NEVER saw a spending bill they did not like!
This one is the National Endowment for the Arts.
I’m a little surprised they didn’t find room for my congressman since he managed to cut $20 million out of their budget.
This is insane.
None of this is going to have a happy ending, me thinks.
Funny,
I got kicked off Lucianne too, during the Dixie Chicks debate. Needless to say, I was was not a Dixie Chicks fan. Never went back.
