President Obama on Tuesday said he cannot guarantee that retirees will receive their Social Security checks August 3 if Democrats and Republicans in Washington do not reach an agreement on reducing the deficit in the coming weeks.
"I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven't resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it," Mr. Obama said in an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, according to excerpts released by CBS News.

For years, Democrats have told us that Social Security is not broke because it has a "trust fund" filled with $2 trillion worth of assets. The assets are in the form of Treasury bonds. If these are truly assets, why would the government be unable to send out checks?
The reality is that they are not assets. The government must tax or borrow more to make good on the the bonds. Obama's threat proves that.

All the payments you’re getting now are being paid in by current workers. All yours went to the ones collecting when you were paying as well.
There’s no longer enough revenue being generated to pay all those that are collecting, sorry.

Let’s hope that these same citizens tell him to stuff it! Sarah Palin will be happy to lead the charge on Washington.

I say stop the SS checks. Let people suffer the consequences of trusting government for their livelihood. It will take massive pain for people to wake up to that fact. That will be the start of the unraveling of the nanny state and return to limited constitutional government.
There is more than enough revenue coming in. We all know it and we need to make sure that everyone we know knows it too
And this, dear friends, is how Chicago THUG politics is played, and played for keeps. Obama’s calculus is that he can cut Grannie’s SS check and the Republicans will get all the blame. In another vein, just as Charley Brown was about to kick the football, Lucy moved it out of his path, and poor Charley fell on his arse; kinda like the Republican party getting hung out to dry time after time after time.
