One of the nation's major grocery store chains is eliminating self-checkout lanes in an effort to encourage more human contact with its customers.
Albertsons LLC, which operates 217 stores in seven Western and Southern states, will eliminate all self-checkout lanes in the 100 stores that have them and will replace them with standard or express lanes, according to published reports.

Many moons ago some one on FR stated that more thift is done by the employees at places like Walmart then shop lifting. That is the main reason for all the cameras above the cash registers.
took me 4 years to get use to em...screw him
one word: shirnkage.
There is a Costco in our area that won’t go use self checkouts because of the shrinkage it attracts. Our local Walmart and Target stores refuse to go to self-checkouts. I see a lot of stuff walk out from our Walmart every time I go there and Target is just a joke too. They followed a woman out of the store and she packed her cart of stolen stuff into her car and drove away while they waited for the police.
It’s only going to get worse because we have an entitled class that will become more empowered by thugs like Obama and Van Jones.
It's not the theft that's the problem with pay at the pump. The way gas stations mark up their convenience items inside I've heard it said that they make more from what you put in yourself than what you put in the car's tank. Pay at the pump cuts out those sales.
As for the self-checkout lanes, in general I love them but I try to use them with too large of orders. On many days it would be faster for me to go with a regular checkout because they don't have a delay to weigh every item. Unfortunately the store will have ten self-check lines open and only three regular lines.
Also produce is a crap shoot. I had some corn last week without a number on it, so I typed "corn" and two identical looking pictures of corn came up with different numbers. I asked for help and the employee typed in a third number instead of those two.
Back when I was on drugs I used to do a little shoplifting.
Last place in the WORLD I would have considered it, is the self-checkout line.
“People should be free to organize if they want.”
I think the resentment against unions stems from the fact that they prop up the entire Democratic party.
That, and they keep people from getting a job in some instances.
I for example wanted to work as wait staff at a certain restaurant. I couldn’t do it unless I joined the union; the union wouldn’t let me sign up unless I worked there; Catch 22.
No job.
Of course a friend or family of the union member would have been accepted. So unions get hated for that, too.
Obama clearly shows his lack of knowledge about jobs with his stupid ATM statement.
I worked for a large credit union and, over a short time, we installed ATMs at every branch with the thought we could offest the cost of the ATM with a reduction in the teller staffing.
What happened was that we experienced what I called “the ATM syndrome”. We had more transaction volumes at the branches and therefore we could not reduce the teller staff. The good news was that we had more members join because of the convenience. They would come inside the branch after visiting the ATM and apply for a car loan, etc.
So, actually, ATMs (at the branch level) created jobs. And I had an entire department of staff to maintain the ATMs (cash replenishment, deposit processing, balancing, and general mechanical maintenance).
It's the only bright spot of New York.
Georgia has nothing that compares.
Our local Wally World still has their self serve lanes, but I hate using them, due to the fact it seems like every time I use them, I have a "forbidden" item that needs to be approved by the manager. Things like White-out, paint, ink, Brillo-pad, etc, etc. I just got frustrated and decided to just go to a lane with a cashier...
I use the self-checkout a lot since most of my visits to the store are for a small number of items. The Mrs. does the larger shopping.
Many years ago I worked a full service gas station and it became apparent that the cost for employees to pump gas and check oil was becoming prohibitive.
I have noticed that the products inside of the gas stations are much higher in cost and I rarely purchase anything other than gas.
I just don’t see pay-at-the-pump going away after so many users like the ease of not having to go inside - but I could be wrong.
I suspect that's what's happening at our local Walmart. The self-check-outs have been "broken" for months.
Costco kept bugging us about upgrading to the Executive membership every time we checked out. We kept saying we weren't interested. We got so tired of it, Hubby finally wrote "don't even ask" on his Costco card. Now they laugh, but they don't ask.
I've noticed that Home Depot recently added a French language option to their self check-out lane registers. In north Texas. Part of me wants to smile at seeing an alternative other than Spanish there, but WTF?
On a personal note, I didn't like the Albertson's layout. Note to grocery chains: most of your customers want to get in, grab the goods, and check out as fast as possible. Trying to navigate through a store with vestibules blocking main paths, intrusive displays, and strange shelf layouts is not a plus.
I hate self-checkout lanes and refuse to use them. Stores that refuse to provide enough cashiers (like Wal-Mart, etc) don’t get my business.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
I think the motivating factor is that self-checkout makes shoplifting easier. That was my first thought.
Its not just you. I really loathe the damn things and like you hate being used an an unpaid employee. Give me a 10% or more discount and maybe I will use them. Otherwise no.
