Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama is seeking $3 trillion to $4 trillion in deficit cuts over the next decade, a move that would require putting Social Security, Medicare, defense spending and tax reform on the table as part of a balanced approach to cuts, Democratic officials familiar with the negotiations told CNN.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, did not say what types of cuts would have to be considered under such a proposal. In the past, one Social Security adjustment debt negotiators have discussed is cost-of-living.

who has elected to depend on Big Government will feel pain, no exceptions

How can you make the comment that Social Security was an "election" that any of us took??? It was a RAT program and has always been a RAT program just about as sacrosanct as abortion (since 1973) to their leadership and base. I did not CHOSE to enroll in SS. My calculations, using actual performance from my own investments since 1961, would have allowed me to become a millionaire with SS "voluntary" contributions. Instead I receive $1,500 a month and it all goes away the minute I die and cannot be left to my children.

Not only no cuts for the next 18 months, he’ll put us another trillion in debt.
Then forecast trillions in cuts during the next President’s term so that he doesn’t have to meet that forecast.

$3-4 T in “cuts” after increasing spending by trillions more. It’s a bait-and-switch, kind of like when a store doubles the price of everything, then cuts it back 25 percent—it’s still more than it was. So now the deficits will be “only” $1.1-1.2 trillion instead of $1.5 trillion? Well, golly gee, kids! What a deal!!!

That is the key to it all.

ALL CUTS MUST BE FRONT LOADED. Accept nothing that is not front loaded!

The difference between the 1996 Clinton model and the 2012 Obama model is 5% unemployment vs 9% unemployment.Clinton was able to move temporarily to the center in 1996 because independents did not view him as an ideologue but a political opportunist doing what he had to get their vote.Obama, on the other hand, is indeed a left wing ideologue who was able to fool enough independents and some dumber Republicans in 2008 that he was not an leftist ideologue. However, since his election, that train has left the station and any efforts to Clintonize his campaign by feinting towards the middle may not be credible to independents who will be muttering fool me once, etc... when they go to the polls.

“This is BS. I don’t want cuts over a decade. I want them today.”

Still, had cuts been implemented ten years ago, we’d be enjoying those benefits now.

Obama has no intention of actually agreeing to any such cuts. He just wants to be able to demagogue the issue. The line in the campaign speech is already written: “I tried to cut 3 to 4 trillion, but that wasn’t enough, I agreed to all the cuts they wanted, but that wasn’t enough, because they have to keep their special interest friends flyin’ around in their corporate jets...” You get the idea.

What he won’t mention is that he asked for 5 to 6 trillion in new taxes behind close doors and made it impossible for the Republicans to agree.

(to the tune of “walk on the wild side - lou reed):

and the media whores said, doot, da-doot, da-doot etc.

SS and Medicare were NEVER “funded”. There is no real trust fund and never has been. The “lockbox” never had a lock.

Your concern is valid, which is why if there is a deal, the debt ceiling increase must be tied directly to guaranteed cuts, including a minimum guaranteed cut of $500 billion for FY 12 alone.

Obama doesn't know the meaning of guarantee. He lies when it's easier to tell the truth. I cannot believe a word he says much less rely on a “promise.”

Look for the small print.

My guess is that Obama does plan to cut three to four trillion dollars. And those cuts will take place over the next 237 years, during which time his type of excess spending will continue almost unabated.

It’s for the great great great great great grand-children don’t you know.

There should be some sort of amendment that limits cuts to the current congress only.

My point is that the spending cuts are included in the same bill as the debt ceiling increase, so that the GOP cannot get punked. One could easily see Obama accept the debt ceiling increase and then veto the spending cuts.

They must be part of one package.

Where is the news on the big meeting today. I have scarcely hear a word. Usually there would be 24/7 discussion. Did either side make a statement after the meetng?
