Endgame for the Hapsburgs
Presseurop ^ | 7/5/2011

“Otto von Habsburg was the last man to have a real idea of the democratic metamorphosis of the Austrian Empire in Europe.” Thus Die Presse reports the death of the eldest son of the last Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary at the age of 98. The funeral of the former MEP will “revive the nostalgia of the Austrians”, the Vienna daily continues, for “Otto was the last intellectual and biographical link with the Austro-Hungarian Empire.... The biography of this man,” who lived through the Anschluss of Austria to Germany and especially the ‘homecoming’ of Hitler, “is the history of Austria.” “A nation that had so little confidence in itself that it could see itself only as a victim [of Hitler] feared a man [Otto von Habsburg] who for decades held to his convictions.” For Die Presse, “the anti-Habsburg cannibalism” was part of the “historical neurosis” of the Austrians, which was eased only in “the therapeutic treatment rooms of the European Union.”

You need to hire a former baseball player as a cook. You can call him the Wholly Ramen Umpire.

From yesterday’s WSJ article on same subject ...

It will be written that Otto Habsburg lived and died a democrat, but sometimes I wonder. There is a story, perhaps apocryphal, that one morning, one of Habsburg’s aides in the European Parliament came to him and asked for the afternoon off. Habsburg asked why. The aide confessed somewhat sheepishly that he wanted to watch a soccer game.

Habsburg consented, then inquired. “Who is playing?”

“Austria and Hungary,” his staffer replied.

Habsburg is said to have looked up from his desk and asked: “Against whom?”

Only if he knows absolutely nothing about the game of baseball. ;’)

Probably would hire a pitcher for the kitchen, but I’d have to hire three more, in order to schedule the rotini, er, rotation.

Goes without saving.

I would buy a pitcher if I needed one in the kitchen. How do you hire a pitcher? Do they have lawyers? Agents? News to me.

It’s wise to be a little wary of a pitcher, in case he’s a plant.

It’s wise to be a little wary of a pitcher, in case he’s a plant.

That would be a recipe for disaster. A plant would really stir the pot and cook up a lot of trouble.
