Endgame for the Hapsburgs
Presseurop ^ | 7/5/2011

Posted on 07/05/2011 8:54:06 PM PDT by bruinbirdman

“Otto von Habsburg was the last man to have a real idea of the democratic metamorphosis of the Austrian Empire in Europe.” Thus Die Presse reports the death of the eldest son of the last Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary at the age of 98. The funeral of the former MEP will “revive the nostalgia of the Austrians”, the Vienna daily continues, for “Otto was the last intellectual and biographical link with the Austro-Hungarian Empire.... The biography of this man,” who lived through the Anschluss of Austria to Germany and especially the ‘homecoming’ of Hitler, “is the history of Austria.” “A nation that had so little confidence in itself that it could see itself only as a victim [of Hitler] feared a man [Otto von Habsburg] who for decades held to his convictions.” For Die Presse, “the anti-Habsburg cannibalism” was part of the “historical neurosis” of the Austrians, which was eased only in “the therapeutic treatment rooms of the European Union.”

There are distant Hapsburg descendants still around some even in America I believe. At least this prince was spared the Hapsburg look, there were scary genetic defects in that line. Having some good beer swilling Austrians in the family tree, I will have to raise a glass to someone who risked his position and life to oppose old Adolf. I don't think the family ever got back the properties confiscated by the Nazis for opposing them.

Why has the traditional spelling been ignored?

Because I am a putz....my apologies. There are serious genetic defects in my family line also obviously related to spelling.

He gave a great line an honorable end. I just hope the Europeans themselves can look beyond the pomp and glitter and see the power of the culture and institutions that he stood for.

You are in good company.

When did we finally standardize spelling in this country, anyway?

In the early 19th century. Noah Webster was instrumental in standardizing American English spelling.

imho, Austria should put back a constitutional monarchy under the Hapsburgs. What is Austria otherwise? It was defined as the seat of the Hapsburgs for seven centuries. Otherwise it may as well join Germany.

A constitutional monarchy in this case would make sense imho

I can’t read “Austrian”. Maybe we could get Øbama to translate it for us.

Actually, the Austro-Hungarian partitioned area of Poland was the one place where the Poles were able to maintain their culture with no external forces against it.

Though I'm right now watching reruns of Królowa Bona (Queen Bona -- an Italian Queen of Poland in the 1400s) and it's from communist times, and the Queen seems to be overacting "Hapsburgu! They are everywhere!"

I don’t think you are a putz. The name appears throughout history spelled “Habsburg” and “Hapsburg.”

I did a Master’s Degree on Beethoven and found that discrepancy repeatly.

Apropos of nothing, I’d like to start a soup-only restaurant called Wholly Ramen Empire.

That would be a great place to go if one was Hungary. What about Greecy Turkey? Would that be on the menu?
