Today marks the 135 anniversary of the Battle of the Little Big Horn near present day Garryowen, Mont. After all this time the death of Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer remains a mystery.

No, the death of Custer is possibly the least of the unknowns about that day. What remains a unknown is not how he died, but when during the battle he died. Yet, that isn’t all that of a mystery...

They were available. Custer’s decision was to not take them. And possible they wouldn’t have survived the march from the Yellowstone to the site of the battle.

Trumpeter Martin, galloping on a horse that day, with a message to Captain Benteen from Custer, was heard to shout to some of Major Reno’s men as he went by, “We’ve got ‘em now, boys!”

Those were considered way too technical for ordinary dumb soldiers to comprehend back in Custer’s day - kinda like giving a computer to a truck driver twenty years ago. That’s the reason the army initially classified the Gatling gun as an artillery piece.
