Omaha was SO bloody in that most (-3) floating Sherman tanks didn’t and sank therefore the troops had to face German Machine Gun nests alone.

I had the opportunity to view a friend’s dad’s flight log from D-Day. He flew three sorties and a total of 13 hours that day. It was land, refuel and rearm, and take off.

A friend was a B-17 co-pilot and said his two missions on D-Day were the easiest ones he had - no-one was shooting at him...:^)

As you said, they were told to just stay in the plane as it was refueled and rearmed, and they brought sandwiches to the plane.

PS - he only quit flying and sold his Bonanza two months ago!

Look at the coastline at that area, and you’ll understand.

Juno was Canada’s beach. Some veterans built a nice memorial centre there a few years back; the guy who raised the money was a customer of mine.

My friend’s dad flew P-47s in close air support. He was shot at a lot. He was shot down by ground fire over Belgium on June 28, 1944. He did not make it back to friendly lines until October.

I love these threads. All of this happened long before I was born, but I am happy to report both of my children find this type of information important to remember. They both knew what this date represented and kept their flags flying.

Why was Omaha SO bloody? Because of all the beef and hogs butchered there? Oppps, wrong Omaha. I was 11 years and 22 days old on DDay and I had 2 brothers in England or on the way. One brother was a combat engineer whose unit put the first bailey Bridge across the Rhine after Patton liberated the troops at the Battle of the Bulge but I don't know when he want ashore. My other brother was a bombardier on a B17 and his unit achieved notoriety when they dropped their bombs on US troops a killed a General. He was shot down on his 17th mission on Aug 14 1944 and spent the rest of the war in Stalag III for the most part...

thanks Jo...I have 3 crosswords...two have the answers from the day before.

One has Dover which I think was a port and radar station.

The word acacia is repeated in two puzzles.

I'm not sure the clue is in the answer because I can also see possibilities in the clues.

Bit of D-Day trivia: Actor James Doohan (Scottie from the original Star Trek series) was a lieutenant in the Canadian artillery and stormed Juno Beach on June 6, 1944. That night, while making his rounds, he was shot six times by a nervous sentry. He took four rounds in the leg, one in the chest (it was stopped by a silver cigarette case) and one through the hand that resulted in the loss of his ring and pinkie fingers.

After recovering from his wounds, he became a scout pilot and aerial observer and was dubbed the "craziest pilot in the Canadian military" for his airborne antics.

During his acting career, Doohan took care so that his wounded hand was never shown (during a Star Trek episode where he had to raise his hand to swear an oath, it was actually someone else's) but there are a handful of shots where you can see it. One is in "Trouble With Tribbles", when he comes into the mess hall with a double armload of tribbles. You can just barely see his hand and tell that he is missing the two fingers.
