Krauthammer: Palin "Not Schooled" In Policy; Doesn't Know She Needs It
Real Clear Politics ^ | June 1, 2011 | Charles Krauthammer

Posted on 06/01/2011 9:43:57 AM PDT by Rennes Templar

FOX News contributor Charles Krauthammer gives his take on what a "Washington establishment elitist" thinks of a potential Sarah Palin run for the presidency. In self-deprecating fashion, Krauthammer says he wears Palin's "hoity-toity" comment as a badge of honor.

"She is very smart and adept. Great political instincts and is a star. The problem with her, I think, is that she is not schooled. I don't mean she didn't go to the right schools. I mean when you get into policy, beyond instincts -- I like her political instincts, I like her political overall view of the world -- but when it comes to policy, she had two-and-a-half years to school herself and she hasn't and that's a problem," Charles Krauthammer told Bill O'Reilly on Tuesday. "It's not only the lack of schooling, it's the lack of effort to school herself and the lack of insight to see that she needs it."

Just another stuffed shirt pompous a$$ who thinks he needs to explain things to us “Little People” out here in fly over country.

Save it Charlie...(Sorry...I meant Charles) we don’t need your high and mighty approval of anyone nor does Sarah.

BTW.....Why is it when you are being interviewed you always lean back, chest puffed out and look like you have a stick up your rear???????

Yeah, Kraut is one of those “shiny new conservatives formerly progressive” who fit right in with the leftist Republican elites and RINOs. I never trust a convert from liberal to conservative. That’s how they infiltrate us.

Krauthammer has no idea what Palin has been doing behind the scenes. Because he's not in the loop he makes assumptions and then spews them publicly as fact.

Palin could be surrounding herself with the best and the brightest - or not - we don't know and neither does Krauthammer.

To say what he said without knowing the truth makes Krauthammer a person of low character.

Like we don't speculate ourselves about a whole lot of different things.

So I guess every one online who ever made a guess about someone in public life has low character.

Krauthammer's a pundit -- an opiner or opinionator or opinionist.

Once upon a time, that might have meant someone who had special knowledge, but now it means someone who makes guesses and hopes they're "educated guesses" that are right more often than other people's guesses.

Time will tell if he's right this time. Maybe Palin will prove his guesstimates wrong.

But don't hold your breath waiting.

And Bill Clinton, Dubya and Barry WERE properly schooled in foreign policy??

Well, maybe Barry because he IS a foreigner...

Charles Birdface Krauthammer is just freaking sexist that thinks women should be held to a higher standard just because she’s a woman. Gosh! How could a woman know anything about foreign policy??

At least Sarah Palin knows that besides for the libs trying to destroy the country, the enemy is RADICAL ISLAM. She also knows more about energy policy than anyone running.

She also knows that man-made global warming is a hoax. Can’t say that about Newt or Pawlenty.

Who the heck made Krauthammer King anyway?

And another thing... foreign policy isn’t rocket science. It’s just matter of knowing who the enemy is and how they effect the U.S.

Name one president that entered office with foreign policy credentials, come on there should be plenty if them, since it seems to be a requirement.

Once upon a time, Secretary of State was a stepping stone to the White House: Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, J.Q. Adams.

In our own time, G.H.W. Bush and Nixon had much foreign policy experience. We could certainly add Eisenhower to that list. LBJ and JFK probably had more foreign policy experience than most of their fellow Senators did.

I don't think Palin and Krauthammer really disagree that much about foreign policy, though. It's just that he thinks she's not preparing and doing all the homework.

Yes we speculate about all kinds of things.

Nobody listens or cares.

Krauthammer on the other hand does it for a living to wide audience. Speculating is fine if you frame it as such. He's stating it unequivocally.

John McCain spent five years in a Chinese Communist concentration camp out of loyalty to his men. He was tortured and brainwashed the whole time. He is the Manchurian Candidate, and he should have been thanked for his service when he came home and quietly retired. He should *never* have been allowed even to sniff the reins of power in our country. He’s the UberRINO, not on our side, rumored to be funded by Soros, and if he ever wins the presidency, you will see another zer0 in the White House.

You could be right. On the other hand, Krauthammer probably knows people in Congress, on Congressional staffs, in the media, and in think tanks. They in turn know former appointees and policymakers, lobbyists, and university experts in various fields.

If someone is seriously preparing for a run for president, they take meetings with experts and the news may get around.

If Krauthammer hasn't heard from his contacts (and they haven't heard from their contacts) about experts meeting with Palin he could assume that her efforts at acquiring knowledge haven't gone very deep.

That's elitist, I know, but Washington's a city of elites and elitists.

I'm not saying for sure that it's how things are, but maybe he's not absolutely without grounds for his speculations.

She is smart enough to surround herself with competent advisers and to LISTEN to them.

I worry when any politician thinks themselves subject matter experts on anything.

I would bet bucks Palin makes everyone she deals with vow to silence, perhaps even sign a contract to that affect. She hugely dislikes the MSM and the Washington elite and wants to present her case on her own terms.

Time will tell...

What is important is the ability to make the best possible decision when presented with the available information. That comes from intelligence, wisdom, experience and base moral principle. The next thing that is hugely important is the ability to communicate those decisions and put them into action. Action after all is what it takes to make things actually happen.

A walking encyclopedia represents none of the above. Just because someone can recall endless details regarding endless policies in of itself does little towards actual problem solving. It certainly doesn’t hurt but it does not provide a useful measuring stick of problem solving ability.

The simple truth is there is far too much to “know” these days. We simply can’t know it all. That’s where trusted advisors and experts come in. And even then one must have good judgement on whether what your advisors are saying makes sense or not and whether or not to seek additional information.

So what is important to me at this point is what kind of team she puts together and then how she campaigns - if she does so.

A president will always need advisers, and it is true that you can’t know all the dynamics of every region of the world.

None the less, there are important regions where it is very important to have a fairly good grasp of what has taken place over the last 25 to 60 years.

The Middle-East, Europe, and now Asia are important regions. It’s very important that a president have a rudimentary grasp of those regions. Even the reading of five to ten books would go a long way toward bringing someone up to speed, with each additional volume broadening the scope of understanding.

A president should know enough to prevent certain gaffs, that would reveal an extremely juvenile grasp of their counterpart’s nation and it’s neighbors.

It is also important to know if a candidate has been able to deal productively in their former positions and with their staff.

Palin has a bumper sticker approach to issues. Get beyond the surface and she is out of her depth. Her knowledge of issues amounts to talking points and Tweets.

How do you know that she doesn't have knowledge beyond the surface? We see her answers to reporters' questions, her Facebook posts, and her Tweets, which are naturally going to be brief, and would only hit the high points, so they would sound like 'bumper sticker' solutions. What people tend to forget is that she has also written op-eds for the Wall Street Journal, and other conservative publications, which give more information, and DO show her knowledge of particular issues.

“My hope is that she runs for the Senate in Az. and uses that has a stepping stone. She is certainly young enough to serve two terms in the Senate and still run for President in the future.”

People advance that idea as a means to marginalize Sarah Palin. There is no useful experience to be gained by a presidential hopefull by serving in the Senate, and a stint there only serves to build up an attackible voting record as the cross-games of the legislative process moves along.

Suggesting a former Governor use the Senate as a stepping stone????? LOLOLOLOl

Presidents usually remark that there is nothing that can prepare you for the awesome responsibilities shouldered when you assume the Office of POTUS.

Having good, knowlegible, and trustworthy advisors with the good judgement to filter through their advice to get to the meat of a solution is the best attribute a President can have. Reagan had it, I suspect Sarah does too. The way she has conducted the One Nation Tour is proof of a loyal and trustworthy staff. There is no doubt that she “can pick’em.”

I do not believe she can win.

Glad you thought 'stepping stone' was so funny. maybe as better term would have been: "build up her resume"

Too many in this thread and elsewhere could use some schooling themselves, so as to be able to differentiate between what Sarah actually says, and what the media says she says.

This can help:

‘Bring Her Down’: How the American Media Tried to Destroy Sarah Palin [Kindle Edition] $2.99

It’s well researched, and a quick read. Fully one fourth of it is devoted to footnotes with supporting URL links.

Some of you may be surprised to learn that she has, in fact, been schooling herself, and that many of the things you think she said, she didn’t.

Don’t let the enemy media (or Palin’s enemies here on FR) tell you what to think.

Not past Esienhower, Nixon schooled as VP under Eisenhower, didn’t learn much, but LBJ, get real.

You r9 are just a little ankle biter with too much time on your hands, unless you are a paid yapper, then you are a Capitalist that is overpaid, no matter what the price. I don’t need much since I am writing from my mothers basement, piggyback my broadband from a neighbor, eat fast-food that maw brings me.
