It all makes total sense if you figure that Fred Phelps is a sociopath who could easily have been a serial killer if he channeled his evil down that path rather than this one.
They feast on others’ misery and seek publicity for it - naturally they seek out the biggest tragedies and issue outrageous statements. They are the face of evil and relish that role. Their ultimate judgement is in His hands.

It is rarely noted that phelps is a lifelong democrat and ran for public office as a democrat.
If this is a small church of 50-75 people, how are they affording all these protests? Travel and motel expenses, professional signs and such are not cheap. I have been in several small churches in my day, but none could afford what these nutz are doing. Did Soros give them a few 100 thousand?
