I’m surprised the article didn’t mention the study on obesity in rats.

Two groups of rats were given unlimited access to sweetened water with identical caloric content per millilitre, one group receiving water sweetened with cane sugar, the other with high fructose corn syrup. The corn syrup group became morbidly obsese, while the sugar group maintained normal weight. What is more, upon autopsy, it was found that some, at least, of the corn syrup fed rats had scarring in their livers.

It’s true. I’ve read a number of studies over the years, and high fructose corn syrup is far worse than ordinary sugar. Moreover, after a certain point it alters your whole system and the way it handles sugar, so that even if you quite consuming it, it’s too late.

Of course, it’s not just the corn industry. It’s the political establishment. The politicians are in bed with the factory farmers. The same guys who give us ethanol in our gasoline and wreck our engines.

I have become more amenable to the idea the HFCS is worse than table sugar, but not by much. We should avoid all sweeteners in our diet, all excessive uses of it. Really, the bad thing about HFCS is that it made adding sweetener easier and cheaper for the food manufacturers. Fructose in high quantities is unnatural. Its in table sugar too, stop eating so much of it, bottom line, the rest is just conspirowhining.

*PING*.

BTW, once upon a time I wrote to you about Dr. Barry Sears -- on re-reading his book, I found my memory was faulty -- he didn't cover HFCS like I had thought.

Cheers!

HFCS is devil’s piss. Whenever I want a sweet taste in my food, I prefer real cane sugar instead.

When obese people learn to balance ‘their own hand’ that spoons the food into their mouths beyond what is healthy...then I will consider what foods are healthy or not for them.

I have stood in grocery lines seeing the so called foods these people buy piled high with snacks and prepared foods. While they are munching on their latest bag of chips or candy bars....and then handing these to the already overweight kids they have with them.

I am tired of the liberals spewing their agenda’s about what we should or not eat.

Moderation is still a good word.......

Label reading is critical. HFCS is in a lot of commercial food products. Not only obvious things like soda and sweetsm but also things like cranberry sauce, salad dressings etc.

Drink water instead of soda pop - stands to reason a) you’ll be better off and b) you’ll save money.

Regardless of the possible health hazards, HFCS exists solely because of government subsidies. High tariffs on imported sugar and subsidies of sugar beet farmers make price of sugar in the US far above the world market price, thus manufacturers quickly turned to HFCS as a cheaper substitute. Members of Congress from corn growing states embraced HFCS as a new market for corn and got generous campaign donations from ADM. Now the government’s push for corn ethanol has raised corn prices increasing not only food costs but also the price of HFCS so sugar is making a comeback. I seek out products that use sugar and the new “retro” Pepsi products actually taste better... like they used to before HFCS.

The body can not distinguish between sugar from cane or sugar from corn. The body reacts exactly the same way to all sugars, by releasing insulin to digest the sugar.
