A respectful crowd of Permian Basin residents gathered at Midland Center on Wednesday to speak at a public hearing about the listing of the dunes sagebrush lizard as an endangered species.
The listing possibly could shut down oil and gas, grazing and farming operations in Andrews, Crane, Gaines, Ward and Winkler counties in West Texas and Chaves, Eddy, Lea and Roosevelt counties in New Mexico.
The hearing was conducted by officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, overseen by Jeff Humphrey, public outreach specialist with the service out of Arizona.
Wally Murphy, New Mexico state field supervisor, told the audience that the lizard, which lives in a narrow band of shinnery oak dunes that stretches primarily from New Mexico into parts of Texas, had been considered a candidate for listing in 2001 and cited threats from habitat fragmentation, pollution, predation and climate change. If listed, he said, operations would be prohibited that could interrupt its breeding, eating or sheltering in habitat areas where the lizard is found.

That just means that the audience did not strangle the gooberment weenies in public.
Oh, yeah...don’t wanna forget those. Sweetwater’s economy would
be devastated if THEY were shut down. Just wait till an
endangered bird manages to fly into one of ‘em! Then they
won’t be so precious any more!
We have one of the largest oak forests in the world just west
of us in the Sandhills. None of the trees over 2 feet high...
good ole shinnery oak! :) Those lizards can stay there...it’s
a national park. This is entirely a bogus issue...as most of
these hand-wringing useful idiots KNOW they are!
I just HATE P.C. government speak job descriptions. Let me translate. Tree hugging Government hack propagandist liar.
Obama and the democrats could give a rat’s patootie about some lizard.
The only issue is how to destroy free enterprise, energy production, and personal freedom, of which Texas has a lot.
Isn’t that job title just another way of saying “PR Hack”?
I was trying to find a link for that from TP&W. Shinnery is everywhere out west as is that lizard.
I was thinking of offering hunting expeditions in the Texas side with the sand hills. 4 seat dune buggy can carry 3 shooters. No limit, no guarantees.
In the past 40 years that I have run buggies over there I have never, ever seen one of these things.
Look for Obummer to push the Green Thing, like it would have survived these matters better
Lots of shinnery north of Abilene, too. My grandmother and
aunts used to go out into that area, because there were also
blackberries (or dewberries) growing there. Rattlesnakes loved
it there, too. Probably loved having the dunes sagebrush lizard
for lunch! LOL! Now....do we eliminate them for EATING the
silly lizard?
Obama and that evil illegal Energy Czar get to incredible damage to Texas with any bullsh*t lizard protection.
Oh, he will. He’s in the pocket of the ones who want them
sold and what better way to create a market for something
useless than to shut down the market for efficient machines.
We were hell on that lizard with BB guns along with the Six Lined Racer back when we were kids.
I saw some fat *** dewberries today, but they was on the other side of the bar ditch.
Wasnt worth the effort, but they will be coming on soon
Gosh, and they even managed to survive boys with BB guns!
That JUST proves my point....or you’ll be arrested any day
now for your childhood “crime”! :)
They do make yummy pies, all the sweeter for the scratches you get from their thorns!
Leave some for the lizards. *grin*
