A quarter of teenagers were jobless in March, representing a surprising increase from February, even as the unemployment rate for the rest of the population decreased.

This figure may only get worse if budget-strapped states raise the minimum wage, and it could also be a sign of greater structural damage underlying our economy, analysts said.
The unemployment rate for 16- to 19-year olds jumped back up to 24.5 percent in March, up from 23.9 percent the prior month, according to the latest jobs data from the Labor Department.
The total unemployment rate fell to 8.8 percent from 8.9 percent.
Even when comprehending that teen employment is volatile in nature, the data that exists serves up some shock and awe, said Brian Sozzi, a retail research analyst with Wall Street Strategies, in a note Wednesday. If these (wage) increases do go through, the prospect for teen employment will remain grim as employers search for workers with advanced skills to fill positions.

The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
How’s that hope and change workin’ out for ya?
Enjoying that Hope and Change crap, kiddies?
When I was 16 - 18 I worked 15 hours a week as a busboy. When I was 19 I went into the Marine Corps. Just how much “work” do teenagers want/need?? What am I missing here?!
They will stay jobless and Obama will exploit them next summer. It won't be a pretty sight to see.
Illegals fill teen jobs, from delivering papers to running a fryolator, picking vegetables, car washes, construction gopher, and so on. Low wage, part time, seasonal jobs used to be how kids entered the job market.
It depends. The 16-19 age group includes kids trying to work their way through college or kids who decide to work full time after graduating from high school.
I would have a LOT more empathy for these youths if they hadn't been so in love with the Marxist. I still remember seeing photos of college kids hugging and crying that dark election night (I was crying also, but for far different reasons).
This age group was not even old enough to vote for Obama in the election, they did not cause the economy to crash, they did not create the housing bubble. We have to enter a job market that is not hiring, or go to schools we can not afford.
20 and under is the only innocent age group in this country. If you are older you contributed to this mess that we will have to clean up for the rest of our lifes. How about instead of mocking the children, you apologize to them?
In Southern California there is zero market for teenagers...all the jobs are taken by ‘recent immigrants’.
The real unemployment rate for everyone (U6) is actually 16.9%, so I wonder what the real figure is for young people?

When they raised the minimum wage to over seven bucks an hour that killed youth employment. Sheesh you can not even get a part time job. Another payoff to the unions that Obama orchestrated.
Young people used to be able to get jobs.... now things have certainly CHANGED!
Maybe they will wise up in 2012!
Welcome to the New Normal.
All socialist societies are like this.
I do fail to understand the ignorance of today’s young generation. Are they simply not educated or are they indoctrinated? Not sure what is happening today but the younger folks ought to be rebelling against taxes and the administrations policies. They are the beneficiaries of the wrong decisions of today...(and Obama expects them to vote for him...).
How much it costs to go to college - almost $15,000 tuition and fees at our State University, my alma mater. A teen would have to work almost 48 hours a week for 52 weeks to earn a year’s tuition.
When I went to school, that could be earned in a summertime. Not to mention that, but I actually had real live associate and full professors teaching me. My lecture classes held 150 people, and *that* was considered huge. Nowadays, classes are taught by teaching assistants; professors that retire aren’t replaced. The salary is just split up to hire a lot of benefit-less grad students. Lecture classes have 500 people in them. Kids leave with $35,000 worth of debt, and no jobs.
It’s a different world than the one we went to college in.
