Dry Run or Wrong Turn? 3 Mid-East Men Try to Enter Calif. Marine Base

Was it just a wrong turn, or something more sinister?

Marine base Camp Pendleton — one of the largest military bases in the country — is reportedly on high alert after three Middle Eastern men tried to enter the base last weekend on multiple occasions in multiple vehicles. And while the men initially claimed they didn’t know each other and simply took a wrong turn, new information from a local gas station about “hateful comments” and “terrorist threats” casts doubt on their story:

KGTV explains some of the shocking details:

According to a Be On the Lookout (BOLO) alert issued to high-ranking Camp Pendleton officials, someone reported hearing hateful comments and terrorist threats from three men at a gas station in Oceanside Saturday.

Investigators at Camp Pendleton said the men asked the attendant for directions on how to get to Camp Pendleton before they left the gas station.

According to the alert, shortly after midnight Sunday, a rented silver Toyota Corolla driven by Naeem attempted to enter Camp Pendleton through the main gate. As it was being searched, Petrossian and Avanosian drove up in a black Mercedes, but were told to wait. Instead, they continued past the gate and onto the base. Following a short pursuit, the Mercedes was stopped and searched.

No weapons or contraband were found in the Mercedes, but base security noticed the air bag in the steering wheel of the Mercedes had been pulled out and re-attached with duct tape and had wires hanging free, the alert said.

Since when does a Military base involved in two and probably three ME WARS not have shoot to kill orders on intruders?

Not a word from Soetoro or Napolitano on this, but do we really expect them to say anything. They only speak-up AFTER people die. If these fools try this again blow them away with before they can get close enough to do any damage.

When I was stationed in San Diego (Almost 20 years ago), there were no actual gates. I also noticed many vehicles just slowing down long enough for their stickers and IDs to be visible. They didn’t stop unless told to by the guards.

Likely it was for traffic control. Cars could get bunched up pretty quickly when the base entrance is off of a busy street and a guard had to lift and lower the gates all of the time.

Never been to this particular base, but other bases I’ve been to have had turn-arounds just before you get to the gates/guards. I have trouble believing that someone who just made a wrong turn would keep on going. Even if this base did not have a turn-around, someone who just made a wrong turn would let the gate guards know that they were only turning around.

This was a probe.

It is also scary because we largely disarm our military on U.S. military bases. I’m better equipped to deal with an active terrorist threat than the average base housing complex, say.

Insanity. This should have changed as a result of lessons learned from the Nidal Hasan attack.

I would think anyone flying by the main gate would be turned into swiss cheese....WTF?

On the Air Force base, I have to weave through a maze of concrete-filled iron posts, Have my ID bio-metrically scanned by an armed guard, and after that there is a huge pop-up barrier about 200' after the gate that can stop a dump truck if the guard pushes the button.

Reminds me of the story of the young woman who was driving home and heard a radio report of an escaped sexual killer who had just escaped from a mental asylum. She got home, pulled up in the garage, closed the garage door, got inside, locked, bolted and chained the doors, locked the windows and ran upstairs. Entering her bedroom she locked the bedroom door and with great difficulty moved a huge chest-of-drawers in front of it. She got into bed and turned out lights just in time to hear a voice say, "Now we're locked in for the night!"

That is what I thought too. Great idea for Muslim middle easterners to pose as Christian Armenians.

No one could ever think San Diego county, far down the interstate past LA, was Glendale, a section of LA near the heart of the city. No way. Even if you were Fresh Off Boat, your directions to travel northeast from the airport would not get you 100 miles south of LA.

When I was stationed in SanDiego, I used to go pick up an old friend of mine on Camp Pendleton. His barracks was about a 45 minute drive from the back gate. I always wondered about the sign I would pass that said “End Of Overhead Artillery Range.” I never saw a “Begin Overhead Artillery Range” sign.

Major road hazards on that part of Pendleton:
Fast moving M1 tanks crossing the roads and bison.

attack a military base full of soldiers = combat operation.

While he might not have understood the radical Muslim mindset, George W. Bush knew how to send a military message. "We'll see your two destroyed buildings and raise you two removed governments friendly to your cause. Want to keep playing?" There was a reason that the U.S. was generally left alone during the Bush years. He spoke a language that the terrorists understood.

For every U.S. victim of these attacks, I suggest that we take out one terrorist training base. No warnings, no permissions asked, we just respond and it doesn't matter whether the base is in the mountains of Pakistan, a remote island in the Philippines, the deserts of Yemen. While the governments would officially squawk about this, there would be significant moderate elements in the country which would be glad to see these groups and their training camps removed from their country.

Our security office just sent us an email about this. Something is very fishy about this.

At MCRD San Diego they now have a maze of K rails you have to zig zag through just to get to the guards. Traffic can quickly back up to the 5 freeway in no time at all. On graduation days its really bad. Why the K rails were not used at Pendelton is beyond me but I bet they are there now.

The problem would be that all terrorist training bases would be evacuated after an attack since they know retaliation is coming. Personally I’m in favor of bombing terrorist training bases as a matter of principle. No need to wait for attack.

This is so scary. Not only because more attacks are being plotted and tested, but because we have an administration that doesn’t give a rip.

I wish!

From where I sit it looks more like we have an administration that is actively supporting the other side.

In a rational country they would have been shot on the spot.
