Radiation 'extremely high', fuel pool dry
Herald Sun ^ | March 17, 2011 6:06AM | Staff

THERE is no water left in the spent fuel pool of reactor No.4 at Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant, resulting in "extremely high" radiation levels, the chair of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission warned.

"In addition to the three reactors that were operating at the time of the incident, a fourth reactor is also right now under concern. This reactor was shut down at the time of the earthquake," said NRC chairman Gregory Jaczko.

"What we believe at this time is there has been a hydrogen explosion in this unit due to an uncovering of the fuel in the spent fuel pool," he said, noting the explosion happened several days ago but its effects were cause for concern.

"We believe that secondary containment has been destroyed and there is no water in the spent fuel pool and we believe that radiation levels are extremely high which could possibly impact the ability to take corrective measures."

YIKES!!! Have you had any increase in cancer in your area? I really feel badly for these people, especially the older people. I think anything like this is hardest on them.

Well the problem is really nobody knows for shure.
You have to remember this was not a really high dose of radiation the people here got (and are still getting).
btw. you are allways exposed to some natural radioactivity
anyway (and this changes from places to places even without man made disasters ;-)
So it´s hard to tell if someone who lets say has got Cancer
10 years ago, has got it because of this accident or not.
Because cancer for example did exist before and after tschernobyl. But as said “we” have been 1000 KM away.
There have been people died who can be directly related to tschernobyl (but they have been much more close).

Well i did some research just out of interesst :-)
It says for Austria there have been 2.3 kBq/m2 cäsium (mostly because nukes detonated around the globe) before tschernobyl. After it there have been 21.0 kBq/m2 in general
(but again this numbers differ from region to region).
there are places where they got more than 100 kBq/m2 and just 20 KM appart there are only 10 kBq/m2.
Austria had just bad luck this time (which is quite ironicall because its the only country in this region of europe which said NO to nuclear power in a public election years before tschernobyl) because we got hit the hardest in central europe because i was constantly raining during this days when the clouds passed by :-(

***** “Ever watch lava fall into the ocean? Well there you go...” *****

Actually a great visual! We live on a Radioactive Ball of Fire (Planet Earth) that has a thin Crust that shields us from the heat and radiation ... a Volcano Erupts ... that stuff has got to be Radioactive (at least as much as a banana)

If this Planet was not a Radioactive Ball of Fire with a thin crust we would not exist ... it is what maintains our Magnetic Field that protects us from Solar Wind and Flares and allows us to have an Atmosphere, Liquid Water and a fairly constant temperature.

Just a thought from a Redneck in Texas

TT

Yea, we have radon here, it’s in the rocks. We know one lady that ended up with lung cancer and had never smoked. Come to find out the house she’d lived in for years had high levels of radon.

Did the mountains have anything to do with the radiation being so bad there? You know once the radiation traveled over Austria did it become trapped because of the mountains? I know smog will do that. Like in Hong Kong.

I am not a fan of nuclear power. I know some on FR are, but, I think the risks out weigh the benefits.

Could you please explain what you base that on, being they aren’t even able to get close to know just what is melting down?

Can you explain the water being found radioactive? Radioactivity 200 miles away.

Oh yea, it’s just an xray amount...right. Right?

No the mountans did have nothing to do with it.
The bad luck was it was raining for days.
Of course the mountains have something to do where it rains.
But this time it was just bad luck :-(
This radiation was in the atmosphere (so a lot higher than mountains can get(. If it would have been a nuke for example the people on the other side of the alps would not even have to worry.
Just for example Nothing would have happened if it would not have rained this day. (This means the next country would have got it)

Even in terms of number of kilowatt hours generated over the past 60 years per life lost (0 in the United States) it is absolutely the safest form of energy production we presently have in the world?

But before you get me wrong the people + countries near by have got all of this anyway!
Austria was just an exeption this time because we got it too (because of the bad weather).
It´s not soemthing special (beside the fact that Austria is 1200 KM away from it).
True there have been some countries a lot more close who didn´t get anything but as said this is life ;-)

No swimming on the west coast for the next 20,000 years.
Forget those Hawaii vacations too. Thank God Obama got his in before this happened.

Well as said the sky is not falling (if you are outside of the death zone).
Will the US get some radiation?
Well i really guess it will get some soner or later. (he he this time i will not get one in europe ;-)
But then again? The problem is?
But then again i live a fine life with about 25x the time of the radiation that has existed before tschernobyl.
So maybe the US will get 2-5 times this rating.
So YES you will detect it and allso YES it will not end your life!
But then again the people of japan have my prayers because they are REALLY afected because of this.

“Blowing out to sea

toward America.”

Oh get a grip.

We NUKED THE CRAP out two of their cities back in ‘45.

We exploded two big friggin nuke bombs right out there in the open, vaporized two cities. Blew ‘em right up into the sky, where the wind blows. Maybe you heard about them.

Nobody in the US was harmed.

And you are worried about leakage from a couple of power plants getting all the way over here?

LOL

As said i was 1200 Km away ( when the worst case scenario happened “wind + rain”)
The US is 7000 KM away so no need to worry.
Even in the worst case you will not get anyway the number of radiation we got (and oh btw. acording to CIA world fact book 25+ years later Austrians live longer then americans).

Right now 4-6 nuclear plants are melting down, you aren’t seriously comparing the two events???

Nobody in the U.S. was harmed?

After the fallout went around the world, how many got cancer that it was never attributed to?

This is exactly why we don’t keep spent fuel rods at our Nuclear plants, we keep them at a remote site Yucca Mountain. Oh, wait. Harry Reid made sure we couldn’t do that, big part of his agenda was to close Yucca Mountain so we have to keep our rods at our plants as well. Thanks Harry, I feel a lot safer now.
