Radiation 'extremely high', fuel pool dry
Herald Sun ^ | March 17, 2011 6:06AM | Staff

THERE is no water left in the spent fuel pool of reactor No.4 at Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant, resulting in "extremely high" radiation levels, the chair of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission warned.

"In addition to the three reactors that were operating at the time of the incident, a fourth reactor is also right now under concern. This reactor was shut down at the time of the earthquake," said NRC chairman Gregory Jaczko.

"What we believe at this time is there has been a hydrogen explosion in this unit due to an uncovering of the fuel in the spent fuel pool," he said, noting the explosion happened several days ago but its effects were cause for concern.

"We believe that secondary containment has been destroyed and there is no water in the spent fuel pool and we believe that radiation levels are extremely high which could possibly impact the ability to take corrective measures."

No kidding!!! So what happens if this stuff keeps leaking? And if it gets into the sea? How contaminated could the sea become? And how far away will this affect people? Japan isn’t all that big and it’s over populated. Not a lot of places for these people to go to get away.

What happens to all of the sea water that is being pumped in? Doesn't it become contaminated?

What caused the emergencies at the nuclear plants? The earthquake or the tsunami or both?

If it isn't recirculated through heat exchange it boils off as steam. If there is damage to the pool it leaks out. There are no reports that I am aware of indicating damage to the pool.

Doesn't it become contaminated?

Yes the steam is contaminated.

What I can’t believe is how poor the quality of information is. Most of what we get is speculation.

I admire the Japanese for how they’re coping with this mega-disaster, but their PR has been atrocious, and in this environment where fear of the unknown is almost as bad as the actual disaster, getting accurate information out is paramount.

Well the worst case scenario would be that the surrounding area of the plant would become a NO GO (at least for permanemt stay) zone for many generations.
For the rest well depending on the weather radiation will be spread in form of rain to different areas. The dose allways depends on the range and the wheater).
Just for example where i live (austria) is more then 1000 KM away from tschernobyl and they still can detect cäsium 137 here because it was raining it 3 times). It will reach its first “half life” in about 5 years.
And yes i´m still here (i was a little kid back then) even with full hair ;-)
But for close regions thake a look at the ghost town of pripiat (again this is the worst case scenario).

Well they have lost containment and cooling, now its something to worry about.

Hopefully the floor of the containment vessel has not been damaged and the melting fuel will be dispersed as designed and stop the meltdown , however, the entire thing will I suspect need burried in concrete like chernobyl most likely.

I don’t think they give a damn about PR right now. They’re too busy trying to save their country from becoming a nuclear desert................

If there were any real immediate, catastrophic danger rather than Media hyperventilating and bed-wetting, we’d see the famed Japanese banzai call to action.
