Then what else would explode?...... Transformers or other equipment related to the transmission of the electricity that they produce.

Then what else would explode? Could have been anything. A nuclear plant is a large, complicated thing. The actual nuke rods are in a containment facility. As far as I know, they don't go 'boom', even if they do melt down.
