Meltdown. Not so fast. We don't know the details yet.

Well, that's comforting, I guess.
Does anyone actually have a clue what is going on in Japan right now? It seems like a wasteland when I see the videos, and I can't imagine the global impact of this earthquake at this point.
Indonesia was tragic, but outside of hotels and a bunch of relatively primitive cities, that disaster had almost no impact on global commerce.
I hate to sound crass, but in these economic times, I can't help but think of how this is going to impact the modern world.

They reported a fire at this plant right after the earthquake. Was put out fast. A third plant had a major Turbine building fire that lasted a few hours. Not the best working environment right now.
To: rawhide
Hopefully it’s not that bad. The structure should be sound, unless they cut corners.

Then what else would explode?...... Transformers or other equipment related to the transmission of the electricity that they produce.
To: Red Badger
Japans reacters are "light water" reacters and are supposed to not be capable of a chernobyl type of meltdown.
I know, famous last words.

Then what else would explode? Could have been anything. A nuclear plant is a large, complicated thing. The actual nuke rods are in a containment facility. As far as I know, they don't go 'boom', even if they do melt down.

From BBC. White Cloud ?
0755: AFP says an explosion has been heard at the Fukushima-Daiichi plant, and says Japanese TV is showing a white cloud above the plant.

Hopefully its not that bad. The structure should be sound, unless they cut corners.
Or unless an earthquake or tsunami caused cracks or breaches in the containment. OR the cesium is leaking into the water nearby....
