Tokyo Electric Power Co. (9501.TO) said Saturday that the temperatures of its No.1 and No.2 reactors at its Fukushima Daini nuclear power station are rising, and it has lost control over pressure in the reactors.

In all fairness only a tiny portion of the US in a earthquake zone

Thanks for reminding FReepers that it is only California vulnerable to earthquakes and communists.

I will probably get blasted for this, but for the sake of decency can we suspend the jokes for a while? I understand that some people tend to react to stress with humor but maybe take it to another thread?

Nothing wrong with a little radioactive steam, is there? Okay. It escapes, vents to the atmosphere.....rises up gets blown with the winds and goes higher and starts to get colder and condenses....nothing wrong here......

For whatever it’s worth Fukushima I - 1 went critical March 26, 1971, while Fukushima I - 2 was activated July 18, 1974. So, yes, that does make them 40 years old.

“Yep, look at the damage enviros did with 3 mile Island and there wasn’t even a leak, not one iota of radiation escaped but that was the death knell for Nukes in the states.”

That tells us more about our politics and victimhoood than anything else I think. We’ve (started) to move beyond that finally (probably by necessity.)

Sad that I have to get this information from Al Jazeera via twitter. CNN is too busy with Mel Gibson.

“Do we really need 60 inch tv’s.”

Your G Damn right we do. And those 60 inch TV’s use less energy than a 20 inch of years gone by. But feel free to live in the dark ages if it makes you feel better. No one knows what the outcome will be here. Perhaps the safety designs will work and we won't have a major nuke disaster. I know you want one to further your hippie cause.

“Venting into the air is NOT good.”

And it will be heading for the US. But not to worry,,,someone will say everything is hunkey-dorey.

Do we really need 60 inch tv’s.

No TV at all here, and I'm freeping from a low power laptop. However your concern over TV's is misplaced. Most energy is used to transport stuff, drive to work, keep warm and keep cool. Do we really need food or good jobs?

“In all fairness only a tiny portion of the US in a earthquake zone.”

Oh yeah? Take a look at this:

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/states/us_damage_eq.php

I count two, -maybe- three US states in that which don’t show significant quakes in the last couple hundred years.

Without radiation we would all be dead. The issue is how much are we exposed to. You are irradiated every time you fly or have an x-ray. The plant could easily release quantities that don’t matter except to the hysterics. On the other hand, it could be something serious. The relevant facts aren’t available. But, in any event, the nucs are, overall, far safer than other modes of generating power. Everything in life, by the way, carries risk.

You sound like you write for Cass Sunstein.

Informative, but outdated. Things have gotten considerably more dire since 11:16 AM.

7.0 is not an ‘aftershock’ - it’s a full blown BIG quake.

It's big but 1000 times less than the original. Whatever was going to be wrecked is probably wrecked.
