Egypt's top archaeologist warns of looting (Zahi Hawass ousted!)

CAIRO (AP) - Egypt's top archaeologist, Zahi Hawass, warned that the country's antiquity sites were being looted by criminals amid the country's political upheaval as he announced he would no longer serve in his ministerial post in the government.

Hawass was quoted in the Friday editions of Cairo's dailies as saying he would not participate in the new government to be led by prime minister designate Essam Sharaf. Hawass, the longtime head of Egypt's antiquities office, was elevated to Cabinet-level antiquities minister on Jan. 31, when ousted President Hosni Mubarak named a new government led by longtime friend Ahmed Shafiq.

Shafiq resigned Thursday amid calls by protesters for his removal, and Sharaf has been tasked with naming a new government.

Hawass said he was no longer able to protect the country's antiquities because of what he called the absence of police protection and because he was the victim of a campaign against him by senior officials at his ministry.

Egypt's antiquities, he warned, were in "grave danger" from criminals. He called on the youth groups behind the 18-day uprising that forced Mubarak to step down Feb. 11 to help protect antiquity sites.

George Noori (of Coast to Coast AM) was cheerleading for Zahi’s ouster last night, as he was not sufficiently forthcoming on the alien agenda. Be careful what you wish for.

Ditto that.

"Zahi was too close minded and dissed me when I brought up the Records from Atlantis buried under the Sphynx, or the Perpetual energy machine under the Great Pyramid. Etc, etc.."

LOL

As arrogant this man is, this must be breaking his heart.

Not surprised, though. The moslem’s are not good to ANYbody else’s history. They can’t stand the truth.

Yeah it was! I was disappointed by the Reggae Music I heard later. That album had all the raw edges exposed that made it exciting to me. The latter stuff seem much to “citified.” What was that one tune? “Draw on Your Brakes Bruddah?” That was killer crazy!

That (thankfully) short-lived reality series “The Amazing Adventures of Dr. Zahi Hawass” was horrible; I think he had no idea that he was exposing himself as an egotistical blowhard prick.

Yeah I like the early stuff much more also. If you haven’t heard it, they’ve released Toots & the Maytals’ Funky Kingston & In The Dark on one CD, it’s very much like the stuff on The Harder They Come.

I’ve always had a girl-crush on Zahi’s chainsaw accent—somehow that endears him to me. :-)

Plus being a teacher and his rambunctious enthusiasm toward learning about ancient Egypt—well, this makes me very sad.

I sincerely hope that he’s ‘hidden away’ some of the rarest/most important artifacts where plunderers can’t find them! :*(

Yes, right next to the REAL Stargate, that we’ve been led to believe is just < insert airquotes > “fictional”...those wacky gubmint types keeping all the good stuff to themselves!

Most of Egypt’s “antiquities” are “other gods” or memorials to “other gods”. Watch for all of them to be destroyed.

You’re desperation amuses.

Even with this outrage in Egypt most Egyptians are better able to take care of their own creations than the Germanic hordes in Berlin and the looters in London.

What is it about property rights that leftists like you don’t get?

To me, he always came across as a publicity hound, a flim-flam archeologist, horning in and co-opting the work of others.

Hawass is a 'popularizer' of Egyptian antiquities as Carl Sagan was for US Science Space Exploration. That is their main function.

seems to me a good time to steal artifacts himself and blame the looters. he could always say he was “protecting” national treasures.

Thanks Betis70. It's a great idea for a GGG topic, because it updates a few from earlier in the year.
Egypt's top archaeologist, Zahi Hawass, warned that the country's antiquity sites were being looted by criminals amid the country's political upheaval as he announced he would no longer serve in his ministerial post in the government.

I’ve always enjoyed Hawass’ enthusiasm when he was teaching about the antiquities. I’m sad to see him go.

Your children will see the pyramids. The alien overlords will take them there when the ships are being loaded.
