I am no fan of mormonism but I applaud their stance of upholding standards. The hard part is that sometimes it hurts to do it. But adults do what they have to do.

And some rules are far more stupid to follow than are others.
Nobody forced those rules on him.
I've got a militant lesbian cousin who runs from Christian institution to Christian institution applying for jobs they aren't going to give her. Seems that most Christian schools have standards they expect employees to uphold. The only stupidity comes from those who seek a means of breaking rules for the sake of breaking them.

Rules are rules and they must be followed by everyone on a team

This isn’t judgmentalism. It’s rules of conduct for “relatively” young people at a religious college. It is, maybe, a cousin of judgmentalism and appears similar, but it is very different.

I'd never buy a car without a test drive or two, or hundreds over at least 18 months if I wasn't sure how fun the car was to live with for a lifetime. . . . Well, the fact that thus analogy applies indicated that you don't understand the issue.

Why would you assume that? back in 1976 the younger sister of my college roommate got pregnant as a college freshman. her boyfriend was also a freshman. A shotgun wedding ensued. They had the baby;their parents continued to pay their tuition and support them. Siblings on both sides who were also at the U of Pittsburgh at the time, scheduled their classes around babysitting the baby. she graduated with a degree in nursing, he went on and became a dentist. they went on to have 4 more children after graduation and are still married 35 years later.

Twenty years this June. Virginity is overrated and more lies have been told in history over the topic than perhaps any other in human history.
FWIW, I am still driving my completely researched 1996 Subaru Outback and 2001 Jeep Wrangler too. Being completely sure about a big decision saves a lot of grief.

Personally, I admire this young man's character. He broke an oath, called himself on it, and was prepared to meet the consequences.
For those non-college basketball Freepers, Brigham Young University's basketball team was recently voted #3 in the latest polls. They were projected as a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament (there are four of each seed, 1 through 16), and were ready to make school history.
They had a home game against a team with a significantly less-than-impressive record last night, New Mexico. UNM blew out BYU, in Provo, by a score of 82-64. As a result, it is unlikely that BYU will be seeded anywhere near #1, as the selection commitee has to consider the loss of a player (whether through injury or other infraction) when they seed.
From what I hear though, even though most of the students are likely disappointed, they support the decision of the coach and the administration.
If only our political leaders were as courageous as this college basketball player.

I understand well enough that human nature often fails at such supercilious promise keeping. It's quite unrealistic and pretentious actually, especially considering the tremendously loose sexual mores of the LDS founder(s).

The 3rd ranked team in college basketball, Brigham Young University, has kicked its starting power forward off the team ... His leaving had consequences: After he was kicked off, BYU played lowly New Mexico who promptly beat them.
