Hosni Mubarak had harsh words for the United States and what he described as its misguided quest for democracy in the Middle East in a telephone call with an Israeli lawmaker a day before he quit as Egypt's president.
The legislator, former cabinet minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, said on Israel TV Friday he came away from the 20-minute conversation Thursday with the feeling the 82-year-old leader realized "it was the end of the Mubarak era."
"He had very tough things to say about the United States," said Ben-Eliezer, a member of the center-left Labor Party who has held talks with Mubarak on numerous occasions while serving in various Israeli coalition governments.
"He gave me a lesson in democracy and said: 'We see the democracy the United States spearheaded in Iran and with Hamas, in Gaza, and that's the fate of the Middle East,'" Ben-Eliezer said.
"'They may be talking about democracy but they don't know what they're talking about and the result will be extremism and radical Islam,'" he quoted Mubarak as saying.

"He contended the snowball (of civil unrest) won't stop in Egypt and it wouldn't skip any Arab country in the Middle East and in the Gulf.
"He said 'I won't be surprised if in the future you see more extremism and radical Islam and more disturbances -- dramatic changes and upheavals," Ben-Eliezer added.

We effin crushed Saddam and Al Qaeda in Iraq. Was that Mubarak’s prediction?
Money quote.
I never had any expectations for Obama, but there’s no one in his Administration that is competent, grown up or fully pro-US. I don’t think the US has ever been in this position before.
Chaney and GWB are probably thinking “What a Clymer? Big Time?
Those of us old enough to remember how Carter screwed up Iran and enabled the Jihadist Islam terrorist movement have a lot of Deja Vue while listening Obozo and his pro terrorist thugs.
+1 to this, unfortunately. There are no serious adults within the top level of this Admin -
With that said, as for Mubarak comments, I would contend his attitude has much more to do with the losing of power much more than his concern over quasi-democracy spreading throughout the ME. Democracy doesn't always seem so great to those whom think power is inherit to certain people only.
No question, we are in serious times here, with serious ramifications. Our problem is we don't have a serious POTUS/CinC who puts America / freedom first. I still see what is happening as a possible real plus for the World in the years ahead (would have much more hope, if we had a serious man in the WH, helping to direct this situation more).
Right, we have the moron in the WH and all the morons who put him there.
Cheney is thinking: ‘Oh, brother ... what a regular half-wit!!-And THIS guy is going to run the country???’
Watch this ass try to turn this into the next Berlin Wall moment. My comment that day to one of the World Bank Officials was how is this going to improve West Germany? After a second, he said, you know, no one is thinking about that right now. Same here, how is this going to improve the Sunni Islamic and secular state of Egypt. My guess, not so well.
“the evil that men do lives long after them”, and on that point, Shakespear was right on the money except this time in a political arena.
I don’t trust the information coming from anyone on this issue. The right seems to be either in full NEOCON mode, or is simply so mired in domestic politics they are making this all about Obama. Limbaugh was totally unlistenable today.
Unlike you, I thought Rush had one of his best programs ever. Rush was 100% right in his assessment.
Wow. I thought he was just in full whine mode. I had to turn it off. Totally useless from start to finish. And I’ve been a regular listener since 92. Actually, the word in my head for Rush today was “pathetic.”
.
I assume you are talking about Egypt, not Iraq.
The Obama Legacy.
Only because there's 50,00 American troops still on the ground. Even with our presence the iraqis are murdering thousands of Christians and driving the rest out of the country. When we leave the place will dissolve into chaos in 60 days.
It's not just Obongo. The entire regime is onboard for this promotion of radical Islam and the Muslim Brotherhood. Hillary is onboard. Jimmy Carter was not a fluke. This is what Democrats do
No Mubarak stated just as I have all along that winning the war would be easy, it’s what came after the war. Ask the Chaldean Christian community in Iraq how well democracy has worked out.
Same thing will happen in the void created in Egypt unless the military can maintain. Mubarak being a former general understood this well.
