Spilled Milk (Thomas Sowell)
Jewish World Review ^ | February 1, 2011 | Thomas Sowell

Despite the old saying, "Don't cry over spilled milk," the Environmental Protection Agency is doing just that.

We all understand why the Environmental Protection Agency was given the power to issue regulations to guard against oil spills, such as that of the Exxon Valdez in Alaska or the more recent BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. But not everyone understands that any power given to any bureaucracy for any purpose can be stretched far beyond that purpose.

In a classic example of this process, the EPA has decided that, since milk contains oil, it has the authority to force farmers to comply with new regulations to file "emergency management" plans to show how they will cope with spilled milk, how farmers will train "first responders" and build "containment facilities" if there is a flood of spilled milk.

Since there is no free lunch, all of this is going to cost the farmers both money and time that could be going into farming-- and is likely to end up costing consumers higher prices for farm products.

It is going to cost the taxpayers money as well, since the EPA is going to have to hire people to inspect farms, inspect farmers' reports and prosecute farmers who don't jump through all the right hoops in the right order. All of this will be "creating jobs," even if the tax money removed from the private sector correspondingly reduces the jobs that can be created there.

Does anyone seriously believe that any farmer is going to spill enough milk to compare with the Exxon Valdez oil spill or the BP oil spill?

Do you envision people fleeing their homes, as a flood of milk comes pouring down the mountainside, threatening to wipe out the village below?

Sheesh, even an entire tanker truck full of whole milk couldn't contain more than what, an ounce or two of oil?

Whole milk is about 3.25% butterfat, which is the "oil" the EPA is regulating.

That is a lot more than an ounce or two of oil per tanker, but it sure isn't enough to regulate it as oil.

EPA has been making up rules for years. The most insideous blatant actions are redefining commonly understood words. It/they crippled industry by making rules to go with their recast definitions. It/they have no controlling oversight and recalling the past there won’t be much now with more Republicans. Recall, EPA was generated under and by Nixon.

Saying milk contains oil doesn’t make it so. EPA, please define, IN EXACT SCIENTIFIC TERMS, the chemical name(s) and structure(s)of such oils. Secondly, define, IN EXACT SCIENTIFIC TERMS, how such oils got into the milk. Lastly, explain, IN EXACT SCIENTIFIC TERMS, why such oils are a) necessary, b) required and c)regulated.

The deeply entrenched in the bureaucracies lunatics of the Left don’t surprise me anymore with their idiocy. These are the people, the life-forms that society once was able to place in institutions, and out of sanity’s way, but they staged a breakout back in the sixties by infiltrating the government quite like the Muslims of today.

Thanks for the ping jaz.

I’d go with the one who has the Dept. of Education at the top of his list.

They know that. It’s why their muscle men are armed. I don’t know for sure if they have a SWAT Team or not, but it wouldn’t surprise me one little bit!

OK, I second that and add the Dept of Ed. to the cut list.

We know it won't happen unless we get super majorities of Tea party candidates in congress along with a true conservative as President. There are way too many bureaucrats, lawyers and accountants who would need to find honest work if meaningful cuts ever happened.

These people are absolutely insane!! Disband these rogue agencies NOW!

I am all in favor of banning the three "E"S:

EPA

Dept of Energy

Dept of Education

Loose those three and we will be well on the way to returning to economic health...

More bureaucrats mean More union workers mean More Democrat Political contributions thru union dues.

It’s all about increasing the ‘Rat Rents (dem subsidies),
not ‘protecting’ people.

You nailed it!

Obama and his appointed thugs have worked long and hard to pay back unions and increase the bureaucracy. This milk oil thing is so ridiculous I’m appalled they even tried it but they have no shame.

Lucky for us so far there isn’t any snow, however it is really cold. Had a film crew here yesterday working on another documentary regarding historic highway 89.

Those sissies didn’t spend much time outside.

It’s an exploratory group from the travel council getting set ups and agreements.

Government at work. Probably getting cold weather bonuses.

Funny thing is lead guy’s name is Romney. I didn’t ask.
