The Philadelphia Daily News reported on a disturbing story that should horrify every gun owner in this nation. Brian Aitken, a 25-year-old successful media consultant who was going through a separation with his wife, was in the process of selling his home in Colorado and moving to a suburban New Jersey apartment to be closer to his two-year-old son when he was arrested in an odd series of events.
On January 2, 2009, Brian was visiting his parents in Mount Laurel while taking a break from moving to nearby Hoboken. After Brian’s former wife canceled his scheduled visit with his son, he became distraught and said something to the effect of “life’s not worth living anymore” to his mother and drove away. His mother, a trained social worker, became worried about a possible suicide risk and called 9-1-1 but hung up after having second thoughts. Law enforcement traced the call and soon arrived at the scene. The police called Brian, who was on his way to his new residence in Hoboken, and asked him to return to his parents’ home because they were worried. When he returned, the cops searched his vehicle and found two handguns, both locked and unloaded as New Jersey law requires, inside the trunk, in a box stuffed into a duffel bag with clothes. Brian was arrested and, according to his attorney, the subsequent trial and conviction were the “perfect storm of injustice.”

Sadly, this is being replicated throughout our Republic and as it stands now (unless the State Prosecutors are elected...fogetabout the US Attorneys) there is little anyone can do about it.

I wondered why this article was posted until I went to the link and read the article. I thought it ended with the Governors commutation but the appeal is ongoing. Read the article.

It’s tricky for gun owners (legal ones) to move from a semi-free state to a commie state. I had to deal with this when I moved from Wisconsin to New York. Seven years later my handguns are still in a secure location in WI and I am still in NY. NY’s unconstitutional pistol permit laws are to blame. This s*** needs to change.

The name of the judge and prosecutor who were responsible should have been in the article so that payback can be delivered during the next election or impeachment.
I think you will find it very difficult to do that legally. Canada ain’t the 51st state yet. They are pretty sensitive about any kind of firearm relative to border crossings.
most counties in NY State will give most people a pistol permit...you apply and wait 6 months or so...
of course it is BS and although I have a NYS permit, I do not believe I should have to have one.
if you look at NYs electorate’s voting record, though, you and I are in the minority and these sheep here in NY cares not for the constitution...so this S*** is not about to change...
They need to get the superior court judge responsible for withholding the exemption statute from the jury removed from the bench, pronto.
I know it can be done (permit) but I shouldn’t have to ask my neighbors for a personal reference just so I can keep a gun in my home. They don’t even know I have guns. And even though we are the minority here I believe McDonald v. Chicago makes this permit process unconstitutional.

Nope. It was always unconstitutional. McDonald v. Chicago just clarified the issue.
I will bet mom has a better understanding of people who are leary of help from a social worker. She really got the ball rolling. Brian should have continued on his way. The police were not interested in his mental health. They knew they would have an easy bust, a idiot prosecutor and an untrained judge.
it is Jersey after all....RINO governors, past or present in NY, NJ, MA, CA are what they are....Christie is a mass improvement over what they had before....but he is, what he is and is not to be ever taken for conservative
I think the Supreme court left the regulation up to the states...they just insisted that the states find a way to allow ownership of guns...
Nobody that owns a gun should ever move to New Jersey, or for that matter, New York, Massachusetts, California, Illinois, and there are probably a few other states.
You could put a false bottom in your car trunk, I suppose.
