WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government is telling half of the U.S. population to drastically cut their daily salt intake.
That's the advice to consumers - and the food industry - as the government issues new dietary guidelines, which are the recommendations behind the popular food pyramid.
For the first time, the Agriculture and Health and Human Services departments, which issue the guidelines every five years, are telling people who are 51 and older, all African-Americans and anyone suffering from hypertension, diabetes or chronic kidney disease to reduce daily sodium intake to little more than half a teaspoon.

Oh, c'mon Jerry! You know those doctors are all just a RACKET!
salt = flavor. At 1/2 teaspoon a day you might as well chew on solyent green.
I am the proud owner of not one, but two of those piss-your-government-off 6 gallons a flush, bisque porcelin monsters. Hahahahah
Dear Govt.,
Piss Off!
Sincerely,
Gigster
I don’t do well without salt, but I take Potassium to balance things. I’m 56, and my doctor told me to keep doing what I’m doing after looking at my last blood test. That means staying on my meat and eggs diet with lots of salt, no fruits, no sweets, no snacks and only low glycemic veggies. No food pyramid for me.
More dog biscuits?
Just two of the changes from when I grew up in the fifties and sixties:
We fed our pets scraps from the meals we ate and bought very little pet food. My Dad would cook gravy and put it over bread for the stray cats.
I lost my cat a few years ago to what I believe was poison food.
We burned our trash for about 5 minutes each evening after supper. About once per month, my Dad would take the tin cans and other items to the county trash dump. There were no landfills.
Burning trash is now illegal. How can this even begin to compare with the exhaust from planes, cars, trucks, buses, trains, and other equipment?
You got that right. Everytime I flush my toilet I cuss out the government..Got lots of light bulbs in storage, and can still buy more before they go off the market..
Healthy Choices: Less government + more freedom
Allegra advising goverment to mind their own damn business.
Let’s hear it for six gallon bisque porcelain commodes.
Their parts wear out, they don’t.
I was on a less than 1 gram salt per day. No sodium bread is horrible. Now I use iodized salt frequently.
"Sir, it says here in 2012 your Cholesterol was 200.1 and you were 5 lbs over the national recommended weight for your height. Service denied..."
If you stay away from processed food, I think the vast majority of people would be fine with the amount of salt they cook with.
It’s things like canned soup, frozen meals, Hamburger Helper, canned broth and the like that have ridiculously high sodium.
Simple guideline to healthy eating - ingredients shouldn’t have ingredients.
Why would they suggest such a tiny maximum amount for the entire population of senior citizens??? It is so small, most people will utterly ignore these warnings.... and what about that percentage of the population which gets severely LOW blood pressure if they restrict sodium from thier diet?
The U.S. population is telling the U.S. government to drastically cut their spending of taxpayer funds.
I’ll take a contrarian position here - I think we do eat too much salt and this here is only a recommendation - not a tax or a regulation. And I agree that the big culprits are processed foods as well as restaurant foods. You’re much better off with foods you make yourself with fresh (or frozen) ingredients.
You think so?? You think they may attempt some type of official rationing in processed foods which will we require that we all use more to make those foods palatable?
Nothing along the lines you describe would surprise me in the least. It is exctly the same twisted logic process employed by the Commonwealth of MA to impose mandatory motorcycle helmet and automobile seat belt laws; i.e. - if a citizen fails to wear a helmet or seat belt and suffers an injury, the expense of treatment is borne either by medical insurance (thereby affecting the overall cost of insurance for “the public”) or by the state (ultimately paid for by “the public”). Because such an injury poses a “cost” to “the public”, the government deems itself entitled to act to minimize such costs by mandating the use of helmets and seat belts.
This is a lovely piece of all-purpose politicxal demagoguery that can be fielded to justify just about any intrusion into personal freedoms.
