Gibbs: whenever we talk to Egypt, we talk about important freedoms of expression. Regardless of importance of egypt’s role in ME, Egypt must address legitimate grievances in Egypt. Must have concrete government And politicial reforms in Egypt. Pentagon communicating message of restraint to Egyptian military.
Reporter- why isn’t Pres giving briefing? Why hasn’t he called Mubarek? (Lots of reporters asking that question)
Gibbs: meetings being held about contingencies. Won’t discuss hypotheticals over who may take Mubarek’s place. Back to talking about immediate govt reforms.
Doesn’t matter. He won’t be back. WH will lift his credentials.
Gibbs is chastened. Not at all his normal pompous self.
The Baraqqis are in over their heads, and surprisingly I think they realize it.

Like many of these “spontaneous” protests, it pays to look in the Help Wanted newspaper sections a week or two prior (or maybe Craig’s List these days).
He can get it back under control. He has had a robust problem with terrorists inside his nation. Now that is providing the military remains supportive, and that he makes the right moves to get things back under control.
This is a brittle situation, and he may not get it back under control. It remains to be seen. We are seeing an organized effort to topple governments, once of which is Egypt. We should not by any means see this as a freedom effort though.
I am not convinced by any means that every Egyptian detests him.
I wonder if Gibbs is out of the loop...?
Did I hear Chip Reid ask “Why isn't the President standing where you are now?” and did I hear Gibbs totally NOT answer the question?
I am old enough to wonder when Americans will be taken hostage.

I actually feel somewhat bad for Gibbs, being asked to try and excuse our own leadership vacuum while Egypt burns.

I don’t think so. The Army hasn’t fired on the people. That’s what sets apart Tienanmen Square from New Delhi.
The upside of this could well be a more democratized Middle East. The downside is that Hillary might take credit for it. (Although maybe even that is an upside. Don’t know.)
Good GOD- Gibbs refers reporters to State. The President of the United States has not spoken to ANY world leaders about/during this crisis.

Want internet turned back on. Legitimate grievancews must be addressed immediately by Egyptian govt. Violence not a response.
