The actions of the Egyptian government amid protests there will determine whether the United States continues to give aid to the north African country, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Monday.

The White House will “make determinations” based on Egypt’s response to the protests, Gibbs told reporters. “We are ... watching the actions of [the Egyptian] government,” he said.

Egypt turmoil pushes crude oil price over $100 a barrel

Fears that the turmoil in Egypt could disrupt oil shipments passing through the Suez canal and engulf the Middle East drove the price of Brent crude oil through the $100 barrier for the first time in over two years.

The price of a barrel of the benchmark Brent crude soared by more than $1.50 to as high as $101.08 a barrel as the protests against President Hosni Mubarak’s regime intensified. Prices are now at their highest since September 2008, at the start of the financial crisis.

Abdullah Al-Badri, secretary general of Opec, the cartel of oil producers, expressed concern about the situation in Egypt and added that Opec did “not want 2008 to be repeated”, referring to when oil prices hit a record $147. But he said the cartel would not increase production on the back of the surge in prices as he believed there was no shortage of oil.

Since August, oil prices have been steadily increasing from around $70 on the back of higher demand as the global economy recovers from the downturn, fuelling inflation.

The latest rise in oil prices will put further pressure on the British government to head off a rise in fuel duty planned for April.

David Cameron gave the latest hint in an interview with the BBC this morning that the budget on 23 March could include a “fuel stabiliser” which would cut the level of fuel duty motorists have to pay when oil prices rise.

Last week the price of diesel at the pump in the UK reached a new high, hitting 133.26p a litre on average.

To some extent the crowds in Cairo are like a Tea Party. Some commentators have pushed that point. Rush busted it on his show today -- the Cairo crowds are riotous and tend to violence. The American Tea Party crowds are super-orderly, peaceful, well-mannered, welcoming, litter-free.

Cairo could become (though I doubt it) the Paris of the French Revolution. When THAT HAPPENS the brutal rise a ruthless General, who could take either side, perhaps like a Napoleon the "People's" side, is what History predicts.

There are many balancing forces at play in Cairo. Many even among the Muslim nations. I like the Russians advice on the matter which is as I understand "everyone abide the law".

Mohamed Ghanem, one of the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, calls Egypt to stop pumping gas to Israel and prepare the Egyptian army for a war with it’s eastern neighbor.

Speaking with Iranian television station Al-Alam, Mohamed Ghanem blamed Israel for supporting Hosni Mubarak’s regime. Ghanem also said that the Egyptian police and army won’t be able to stop the Muslim Brotherhood movement.

There are doubts about the loyalty of the Egyptian army to president Mubarak. If the brotherhood takes control over Egypt, it will be very messy from the whole region.

In the meantime, EUR/USD , GBP/USD other pairs have enjoyed the relative calm in the Egyptian crisis and regained most of their losses on Friday. An escalation will send them down, and will strengthen the dollar, yen and Swiss franc.

“American wants Obama removed.” Apparently only 1/2 of American wants him out. I went to the Glen Beck rally in DC, and then after it was announced decided to go to the other big rally held by those comedians, am blocking on their names. I think Cobert was one. If I understand the GB rally had a year or two of planning, while the other one only had a couple of months. It looked like there was a very large crowd at both rallys. Later when Metro (the local subway system) gave ridership statistics they listed a little over 500,000 for the GB day, and a little over 800,000 for the comedians’ rally. While a lot of the GB people may have come by long distance bus, the comedian’s had a fair number of supporters in the area able to walk or take a local bus, so those two factors probably cancel each other out.

The simple fact is that more and more people are moving to areas where they feel in agreement with their neighbors. Thus is you live in a red state it will seem that all Americans want O to leave. If you live in a blue state you will probably want him to succeed.
