This is why a number of pundits think we may have ignited the spark that could end with only one outcome: a general world war

Which pundits have said that?

2047 The headquarters of the ruling National Democratic Party are ablaze in central Cairo, and there are mounting concerns that the flames could spread to the nearby Egyptian Museum, which houses some of the country’s most important cultural and historical artefacts.

2037 Brian from Honolulu, US, writes: “I have been hearing many calls so far, from Egyptians to those abroad, for a much stronger call of support from the US administration towards the demonstrators. I think it must be kept in mind that the demonstrators have offered no real option as an alternative to the current Egyptian government. They have only demanded that the current leadership step down. The US administration must be careful how they tread, as there is potential for a power vacuum to develop, where any number of opportunists might find an open door through which to walk.”

2034 Protesters have set fire to the Egyptian Tax Authority headquarters, an office tower in central Cairo near the interior ministry and other government buildings, Reuters reports, citing witnesses. Smoke can be seen billowing from the building and the flames are visible from some distance away, witnesses say. There has also been gunfire reported in the area.

He wouldn’t know about the Middle East exploding. While his Crisis Team met for two hours at the White House this morning, he was out watching his daughter play basketball.

armed groups attack Egyptian security buildings.

I was just telling my son that these reports remind me of the days when the Berlin Wall fell. I remember the reports of the Stasi HQ building being stormed by protesters. We heard years later that in amongst these protesters were a number of CIA assets who were emptying the filing cabinets while the East Germans were looting the office furnishings.

I wonder who is mixed in with the protesters in Cairo?

Re Upper Egypt; the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) has some background on the new members of the Egyptian government.

The new vice-president Omar Suleiman was born in Kena, Upper Egypt. Despite his humble origins he made it into the top echelon of Cairo society. Suleiman fought in the wars 1967 and 1973. 1993 he was made the head of «Mukhabarat», the secret police. He has served as Mubarak’s trouble shooter, and taken part in several negotiations between Israel and Palestinian groups, and between Hamas and the PA. According to the NZZ Suleiman is also appreciated in DC.

WikiLeaks cables: US ambassador in Cairo calls for less confrontation in dealings with Egypt

It looks like Ambassador Scobey is the only one around who has any sense. She will be tossed under the bus in due time.

Yet he did it. He has nothing on his daily schedule. THE MIDDLE EAST BURNS... he plays. Totally upsetting for me.

Eeeegads.

I mean it’s one thing to take some time to clear your head- regardless of WHO the president is it’s wise to keep balance and perspective, but good GOD man- this is a unique world crisis that has potential to dramtically affect the security of the nation you are sworn to protect.

Jackass.

For most Muslims on the street, these treasures are only a source of money or to be despised as they predate Islam.

No, most Egyptians are enormously proud of their ancient history. Egyptians are MUCH more educated and worldly than Afghanis.

The Politico article in 1988 only links to Politico’s front page. Nothing that could find on basketball.

Does anyone have a link or is it a rumor?

Truly a dumb idea. If you want to get American soldiers killed, station them in the middle of a war zone.

Agreed.... I'm just predicting.

Obama was not at the meeting because he wants deniability.

I’m sure somebody, probably Clinton, said that the US couldn’t just wait it out and had to formulate a policy, but since Obama doesn’t want his soul mates in the leftist/Islamist dictator world to think badly of him, he just left the room.

I bet he was given an ultimatum by somebody, btw. It was time to develop a policy, and he could either be part of it or not. In any case, he’s probably busy waiting from that call from the ME telling him he’s the 12th imam.
