A 22-year-old Guatemalan immigrant was crushed to death when he tumbled into the mixer at a Brooklyn tortilla factory early this morning, police said.
Juan Baten, 22, often had to reach into the mixer to help the dough along, sources said, but at 2:30 a.m. his hand was snagged by one of the blades, and he was sucked inside.
The powerful turbines broke his neck and killed him instantly, police said.
Baten, who lived with his common-law wife Rosario Ramirez and their 7-month-old daughter Daisy, moved to New York from the tiny village of Cabral six years ago, shortly after his father was killed in a bus accident, family and friends said.

I am trying to weigh the tragedy of this with the obvious humor of how it happened.
It is like the “Chuckles (the Clown) bites the dust” death on the great Mary Tyler Moore show.
I mean, you went as a Burrito? Or just “totpos?”
If I went that way, I would INSIST (if I could come back to say so) that those jokes be front and center.
Prayers for the family, though. He can’t come back and help them see it that way.
Chip off the old block....
Chipped beef...
Tortilla Flat...
At least this helps Taco Bell get over their 40% beef threshold.
Hilarious.
Reached into the mixer with his arms? Not with a push-pole or paddle or something else he could easily drop if it got snagged?
This is tragic, but I also see an employer willing to cut costs by hiring a cheap illegal immigrant (likely not a speaker of English or literate in any language) and not have to pay for safety training/safeguards or adhere to OSHA regulations or take taxes out of his paycheck etc.
Did you hear the one about the optician who fell into his eyeglass machine and made a spectacle of himself?
“Baten’s co-workers, including his cousin, Hector Baten, think he may have been listening to music just before the accident and dropped his earphones into the dough. Then when he tried to retrieve them, he was pulled in, Leon said.”
I’m sorry this young man lost his life, whatever the reason, and may he rest in peace. But, *if* it turns out this is how/why the accident actually occurred, it’s also got to be one of the most careless actions I’ve heard of in a long time.
Dang that’s cold....
Carlos Darwino, donde esta?
I’ll keep an eye for him.
I’ll keep an eye out for him.
wish I could see straight...
He's all right now.
I want to die in my sleep, like my grandfather. Not screaming and yelling in terror, like his passengers.
This story made me wonder.
My thought exactly. Actual failure on procedure by employer or employee?
This will likely stir up a law suit.
Oaha is going to have a field day.
LOL!!
