• Jumps in Central Valley • Six counties now have at least 20 percent unemployment

California’s unemployment rate increased to 12.5 percent in December, although nonfarm payroll jobs increased by 4,900 during the month, according to data released Friday by the California Employment Development Department from two separate surveys.

The U.S. unemployment rate decreased in December to 9.4 percent.

In December 2009, the unemployment rate in California was 12.3 percent. The unemployment rate is derived from a federal survey of 5,500 California households.

The jobless rate jumped in all but one Central Valley county last month. The only county to see a decrease was Sacramento. Merced County topped the 20 percent mark for jobless adults.

California: Heading for an Iceberg
How do the Golden State and the Titanic differ?

NOVEMBER 9, 2010 12:00 A.M.

By: Dennis Prager

Okay, riddle fans, here’s a toughie: What’s the difference between California voters and the passengers on the Titanic?

The passengers on the Titanic didn’t vote to hit the iceberg.

Most Americans understand that California is sinking. What is almost incredible is that it has voted to sink.

On Election Day 2010, Californians voted Democrats into every statewide position (one is still undecided). This is the party that single-handedly has brought one of the world’s greatest economies to near-ruin. There may well be historical parallels to what Californians did — but I cannot think of any.

A listener called my radio show two days after the elections to tell me that his business is booming — thanks to Californians. His occupation? He’s a real-estate agent in Phoenix, Ariz.

The middle class has begun to leave California. It is, of course, impossible for most members of such a large group to leave a state; few people leave their family, their friends, their job, and their home except under the most dramatic circumstances. But this fact makes all the more noteworthy the exodus from California that has been taking place.

You have to wonder how many businesses and individuals would leave California if their friends and family could also leave, if they could find a comparable job elsewhere, and if they could sell their homes without losing money. What you don’t have to wonder about is who would stay under those conditions. The state of California would eventually be left largely to those groups who voted Democrat in this election: rich liberals (such as those who live in Nancy Pelosi’s Marin County, in the Bay area, and in West Los Angeles); state and municipal workers (who vote Democrat in as direct a pay-for-vote scheme as a law-based society allows); those who rely on state and city governments for entitlements; and those Latinos who either fall into the last category or who unfortunately identify the Republican party with anti-Latino sentiments because it opposes illegal immigration.

Those who believe in individual responsibility, the free market, and personal liberty are a minority in California. We greet each other as Americans would greet each other meeting in a foreign country.

WRONG!

This myth still goes on. The rate is deduced from a phone survey about whether you’re working and if you’re not then you have to be looking to count. This one goes by no other stats.

We had lunch yesterday at a restaurant in Northern California. Couldn’t help overhearing a conversation on the table across from ours as it was a retired California school administrator loudly bragging to his friends about his administrator credentials. But he lamented the fact that about two thirds of his fellow administrators are incompetent deadwood. He claims it’s because of the hiring quotas. He carefully corrected himself and said they weren’t actually quotas but “goals.” He said the state takes a census and they seek to hire minority administrators proportionately to the census. He went on to say that unfortunately, not all the minority new hires are trained properly in their administrative duties and many don’t even have an aptitude for it so it leaves the burden on people like him who are good administrators. No mention was made of pruning the deadwood.

Sheila said I looked like there was steam coming from my ears, so I finished up my coffee and we left.

There are folks like your daughters boyfriend out there and to them, I tip my hat.

I’m just ticked at the constant manipulation of data to make this admin look better than it is.

I’ve heard that the actual unemployment rate in CA is near 20%. I don’t remember the source, but they were counting all of those not full-time.

I can’t help but be skeptical that this rate is being purposefully held down by including those who wouldn’t have normally been considered as “employed”.

There are lies, damn lies and statistics.

All the best to your family and your “future” SIL. He sounds like a fine young man with a good head on his shoulders.

...screw them and the horse they worked, starved and taxed to death. Good riddance!

Well, the state could always hire people to go catch those pesky little fish that clog the irrigation pipes and PUT THEM IN ANOTHER LOCATION so the farmers can grow food to sell and hire manual labor. Dumb butts. You can feed your family on Kumbaya, don't you know.

A very good point illustrated by this you tube clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ulu3SCAmeBA by Mint.com.

This was such a good example of how the current admin is hiding the real numbers that I added it to our high schools safe video sites web collection for the social studies and economics classes to view.

For a depression you need high unemployment in conjunction with a contracting economy.

If they want unemployment to go down, they need to raise taxes, legalize gay marriage and ban guns.

That’ll fix the problem.
