New Ala. gov: Just Christians are his family
AP/Yahoo ^ | 1/19/11 | Jay Reeves

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley told a church crowd just moments into his new administration that those who have not accepted Jesus as their savior are not his brothers and sisters, shocking some critics who questioned Tuesday whether he can be fair to non-Christians.

"Anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother," Bentley said Monday, his inauguration day, according to The Birmingham News.

The Anti-Defamation League on Tuesday called Bentley's remarks shocking.

"His comments are not only offensive, but also raise serious questions as to whether non-Christians can expect to receive equal treatment during his tenure as governor," said Bill Nigut, the ADL's regional director.

Speaking at Dexter Avenue King Memorial Church after the official inaugural ceremony, Bentley told the crowd that he considered anyone who believed in Jesus to be his brothers and sisters regardless of color, but anyone who isn't a Christian doesn't have that same relationship to him.

"If the Holy Spirit lives in you that makes you my brothers and sisters. Anyone who has not accepted Jesus, I want to be your brothers and sisters, too," Bentley said.

There was a tribe in the Arabian Peninsula who did worship an idol which they called “Allah” or “Allat”. Mohammed got rid of all the other idols and made his tribal god The “God” of the Arabic people. As far as I can tell in my studies, the idol is still there, it is the black stone they all try to touch while performing the Haj.

I don’t think there is ANYTHING in the New Testament that infers Christ thought that.

No, it's up to you to "infer" but as a point of fact, it doesn't even imply that. It states it as fact. Read it and see.

——His comments are not only offensive, but ——

The conclusion to be drawn is that non Christians are offensive. To be claim to be offended for being offensive is not allowed

will be interesting to watch this guy’s career.

You forgot to finish the sentence -- collape.

He sounds like a sanctimonious jerk. Is he related to Huckabee by chance?

But you, surely, know in your heart that it is THEY who are damned for worshiping the new, false prophet named Mohammad

New, compared to Biblical Prophets but by no means the newest false prophet.

(I know you didn't say newest)

Bible study will be fun there with all the actual prophets hangin’ around, and the Mormons sulking in a corner and stuff.

I should have read the rest of your reply before replying myself. That's exactly what I was thinking of.

Except I'm not so sure that followers of a false prophet will be anywhere near our neighborhood.

Ashfaq Taufique, president of the Birmingham Islamic Society, told The Birmingham News he wasn't sure how Bentley's remarks were intended. "Does it mean that those who according to him are not saved are less important than those who are saved?" Taufique said. "Does he want those of us who do not belong to the Christian faith to adopt his faith? That should be toned down.

Toned down? Really, Mr. Taufique? Then in the interest of equality, how about toning down the rhetoric of Islam (Convert or we'll kill you)?

Watch his career collapse? Probably, after all they crucified Jesus. Why should we expect better treatment?

Several verses have already been posted, supporting the governor's position. Let me add a couple more:
“For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, ‘Abba! Father!’” (Rom. 8:15).
“We are sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus” (Gal. 3:26).

Obviously, someone who does not belong to my family is not my brother or sister! That doesn't have ANYTHING to do with how I treat that person, he's just a member of a different family. I think that's what the governor meant, except that he added that he would like to be that person's brother, i.e. he would love for that person to come to Christ.

My understanding is the Christian NT regards all people as *neighbors* but not brothers in the spiritual sense.

Bentley is an idiot. Regardless of his beliefs, the governor of a state just doesn't say things like this.

Unfortunately my home state of Alabama has, yet again, elected an idiot.

Yeah, he was probably speaking religiously. Anyone who knows what Jesus Christ taught and did knows He reached out to those who did NOT believe...so this kind of “furor” is ridiculous.

What if he said, “I’m not a Christian, so I’ll treat anyone and everyone any damn way I please—I’m not bound by this ‘Love Your Neighbor’ ethic taught by Christ.”

(You know, kind of like Obama—he refuses to help his brother, aunt, poor extended family—even though he is a multi-millionaire. But he has NO PROBLEM “spreading the wealth” earned by others for social programs he sees fit to endorse.)

Right - ALL people are created by God and as such are brothers and sisters..

However to enter the Kingdom of God you pass through a narrow gate and only do so as a believer in the Christ. Jesus is the way.

Many are called but few enter.

Nice reply, I have never heard Moses refer to the Isrealites as Children, but as God’s people..Perhaps I am wrong, but that is what I hear Christ say in the Bible, in that time, the old testament concept of being God’s child was never mentioned unless it was drawn in relationship to Christ.
So the concept of being brothers was as creations of God, or physical brothers of parents.
So if only the children of God are given Heaven as spoken of Biblically, then in that context, in that perspective is the point true that the only brothers of a Christian are those who live in Heaven through Christ.
No offense intended, but no man is good, and worthy of what God wants to give..not Moses, Not David..etc...

I do not think that the description I gave makes one skip over the old testament, and certainly is not a new God, always the same one..But God can do anything including severing old paths that no one walked to fulfillment and starting another completed by a new decree...In that way the first commandment is fulfilled..Is not following God doing what he says? Wasn’t this the problem for Adam and Eve?

but only those who accept redemption through the blood of Christ are given to be God’s children, being a created being does not mean you are a child...

You are trumped by a higher source:

So only by accepting Jesus Christ as your Saviour will you be called God’s child, all else will not..This is God’s will for all peoples..he wants to be worshipped in truth and in spirit, and Jesus is his truth, the ten commandments will certainly still exist in Heaven, how else could it be Heaven?
The problem we are having is no one on earth ever fulfilled that walk but Jesus..so he is the path..the Savior and your Messiah..whether you accept that or not..
Peace in Christ..Got Jesus?
