(Governor)Branstad joins lawsuit against federal health care reform (Iowa)

Governor Terry Branstad says the state is signing onto the Florida lawsuit against the federal health care reform law. Tim Albrecht, the governor’s spokesperson, says the lawsuit challenges the individual mandate of the federal healthcare bill that would force Iowans to buy the federal government’s mandate healthcare insurance.

He the law also expands Medicaid, making it very costly with a “one size fits all approach” that he says would force the states to cut other critical programs. Albrecht says the Republican governor is well aware of the impact of the potential impact the health care bill would have on the state budget.

He says the governor is in the process of putting together a five-year budget, and that gives him a clear picture of the impact on Iowa taxpayers. Brenna Findley ran unsuccessfully to become the state’s Attorney General, and signing onto the lawsuit was one of her campaign stands. Findley is now working for Branstad.

Albrecht says Findley is now offering legal advice to the governor on the lawsuit. Iowa is one of six additional states to join the 20 that were already signed onto the Florida suit. Albrecht says Virginia is doing its own lawsuit, so there are now more than half of the states that are challenging the health care reform law and the constitutionality of the health insurance mandate.

Ohio, Kansas, Wyoming, Wisconsin and Maine are the other states that join Iowa in signing onto the suit.

Title should be:

‘Iowa governor signs onto Florida lawsuit against federal health care’

I found a non-Des Moines Red Star article and forgot to change the title.

Maine’s previous democrat governor would not join the lawsuit.

Maine’s new GOP TEA Party governor can’t wait to join the other states who are suiing to overturn this “healthcare” takeover. YES!

I never thought I would be impressed with Branstad to the degree that I am.
I reluctantly voted for him expecting a lukewarm retread of his last term.
But he has done a fantastic job of appointing great conservatives to his administration.
And he has strongly come out for a more efficient (smaller) government.
And having Brenna Findley on board is simply awesome!

Woo Hoo for our new governor of Ohio. Strickland wouldn’t sign on to repeal. He was a staunch DEMORAT, but, Kasich is a strong conservative.

Let’s pray this monstrosity of a healthcare (?) bill, dies and dies soon.

Thats 50 plus 1 percent. Add the Old Dominion and we got a good majority.

Time for an Article 5 convention.

“Maine’s new GOP TEA Party governor can’t wait to join the other states who are suiing to overturn this “healthcare” takeover. YES!”

Is he going to deep-six Dirigo health plan? Maine actually was the first out of the box—i.e., before Romneycare—in adopting a government-run health system that allegedly was going to achieve universal coverage. They never even came close and Maine continues to have some of the highest health spending in the nation. Folks in the NE never seem to learn that heavy regulation is not the best strategy for high quality health care that’s affordable.

Not many Mainers signed up for Dirigo....the plan did not succeed in providing coverage to the uninsured. In fact, until I saw your post, I hadn’t seen or heard of the Dirigo plan in a long time. Dirigo, when it existed, was on a much smaller scale than Romneycare in Massachusetts.

Maine’s new governor is VERY conservative....I don’t see him going for anything that resembles socialized medicine, be it Maine’s defunct Dirigo or Obamacare.

“Dirigo, when it existed, was on a much smaller scale than Romneycare in Massachusetts.”

True, but when they rolled it out, they claimed they were going to have universal coverage: “When enacted in 2003, Governor Baldacci’s Dirigo Health Reform Initiative was widely heralded as the first to seek universal coverage.”
