(Reuters) - Doctors performed a tracheotomy on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords on Saturday, inserting a breathing tube through a hole in her neck and removing her from a ventilator, hospital officials said.
It was the first time Giffords was removed from the ventilator since last Saturday, when she arrived at University Medical Center after a gunman shot her through the head.

I went through a surgical procedure last summer and had to get pumonary clearance. I asked a lot of questions of the physician’s assistant in the respiratory group since I have some respiratory issues (see my tagline). It was explained to me that if I were ever intubated, the tube would likely be removed and I would get a tracheotomy after about a week to prevent pneumonia setting in. This does not mean you will never speak normally or breathe on your own again.
I do wonder if Obama didn't oversell her condition at the memorial rally in Tucson.
That is a horrible shame. The Giffords family does not deserve that , neither does the Senator. This is the Obama MSM image machine in action. If she passes away, you will see the death notices in size 2 font, buried in the middle of the propaganda rags that pass for news papers these days, unless they decide to use her corpse to get their way, if it comes to that.Obama and his in the tank press could care less about the Senator or her family. I pray for her survival and return to whatever life she must now have, but I taste bile when I see her being used by the Obama left as a poster girl for their own purposes , whatever might occur. They are the lowest lecherous political leeches I have ever seen in my entire life.America sees that accordingly and they do not even know it,which is even more strange.One would think the Obama crowd would have at least a small modicum of some vestigial dignity left. Apparently they do not. I consider them completely inhuman, and believe they will do inhuman things to America if allowed to continue in power.
Yes with Obamacare we would have to factor her age and the quality of life to find out if all the money is worth it. She may not come up to the desired formula to continue treatment. Maybe a few pain pills would be better for her. Like Obama told the woman about her mother.
I know a guy who was in a severe accident and has a metal plate in his head. He can function but his speech is a little off and also he talks alot to others and often to himself. He can drive a shuttle bus as he does on the job but you can tell he’s just a little off but quite functional. We will have to wait and see the results of Gabby’s trauma.
They keep breathing tubes in longer because they are hard to put in.
When my daughters were on ventillators when they were babies, they had to be breathing on their own for a while before they actually took out the breathing tube.
You got that right. We have so much collateral damage in Southern Arizona from illegal aliens, I can’t even begin to tell you. Sometimes they take out two or more of us at a time. Thanks to them, we are only down to one trauma center (granted, that DOES seem to be run extremely well).
Nothing, nada, we are spittle on the elites’ shoes as far as the open border. And not only murders and other violent crimes, Tucson is always in the top five for property and stolen vehicle crimes. (I “club” my truck everywhere, even in the better parts of town, because they love to steal our Fords.)
And then there are all the drug addicts and leftist-raised offspring running around like juvenile delinquents all day.
This is the town we live in, but *now* the media decided to pay a little attention to one incident. I wish they cared that much the rest of the time.
She will be the poster child the Democrats have been waiting for to strip the Citizens of their God Given Rights of Free Speech and Self Defense, bet on it.
I pray for this woman, but I do not forget that even though she has been a supporter of the Second Amendment, she is also 100% for Abortion on Demand.
If killing a fetus to manufacture a wonder drug that would make her whole again was an option, she would have no problem with it. I am a Leukemia Patient, and I would never allow myself to be treated with Embryonic Stem Cells, even if it would save my life.
They are milking this for all it's worth. There will probably be a call for a National Holiday when she returns to the House. I am not being heartless, I just remember the immortal words of Rahn Emmanuel, “you can't let a good crisis go to waste”.
Yep, we will just have to wait. If it turns out that she is not able to perform the duties of her office, I think that for the good of the people that both sides could agree to remove her from her seat and a special election held so that the people of her district can be represented properly.
My local radio station played the above update on Representative Giffords. She is now able to give her husband 10 minute massages.

She was already being groomed to be the next Pelosi (or the equivalent in the Senate after they moved her there).
The local media had already adorned her their princess, years ago. Only glam shots of her posted in the paper, while any R women were shown in the most unflattering light possible. And that’s just one, dumb example of how they painted her.
I’m sorry to say that I am bitter that Giffords was one of the biggest supporters of DeathCare. She disobeyed the vast majority of her employers who did NOT want that crammed down our throats.
That’s nice that she’s getting the world’s finest care, but too bad for the rest of us (unless the Rs grow a spine).
She was always a Marxist, through and through — just managed to fool many. I’m definitely afraid for what’s coming next, after she recovers.

When you have a trach tube in for a long period of time the throat can remain too swollen for air to pass through it without being held open by a tube. She can breath on her own, but they have to open airway for her. Whenever I had surgeries that lasted longer than 10 hours they had to do this.
Um I have no clue what you’re even talking about. Since I’m a nurse anesthetist who routinely gives anesthesia for operations <10 hours, I’ll conclude that you are simply mixing up terminology since your post makes no sense to me.

Obama took credit, but he had nothing to do with it. According to Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who was in the room when it happened, "'a little bit of girl power' seemed to help fellow Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords open her eyes and begin an amazingly quick recovery from a gunshot wound to the head.... 'We were taking turns holding her hand. And I said to her, Gabby, you've got to get up and get better so we can go back to New Hampshire this summer. We're fully expecting you to be there.' Right when I said that, she started to open her eyes."

I'm in her district, please don't believe everything that you read.
