Palin Calls Criticism ‘Blood Libel’
New York Times ^ | January 12, 2011 | MICHAEL D. SHEAR

Posted on 01/12/2011 5:42:46 AM PST by reaganaut1

Sarah Palin, who had been silent for days, on Wednesday issued a forceful denunciation of her critics in a video statement that accused pundits and journalists of “blood libel” in their rush to blame heated political rhetoric for the shootings in Arizona.

“Acts of monstrous criminality stand on their own,” she said in a video posted to her Facebook page. “Especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence that they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible.”

Ms. Palin’s use last year of a map with crosshairs hovering over a number of swing districts, including that of Gabrielle Giffords, had increasingly become the symbol of that overheated rhetoric. In and interview with The Caucus on Monday, potential 2012 rival Tim Pawlenty, the former Republican governor of Minnesota, said he would not have produced such a map.

But in the video, Ms. Palin rejected criticism of the map, casting it as a broader indictment of the basic political rights of free speech exercised by people of all political persuasions.

She said that acts like the shootings in Arizona “begin and end with the criminals who commit them, not collectively with all the citizens of a state.”

“Not with those who listen to talk radio,” she added. “Not with maps of swing districts used by both sides of the aisle. Not with law abiding citizens who respectfully exercise their first amendment rights at campaign rallies. Not with those who proudly voted in the last election.”

Her name was dragged into it immediately, when the victims bodies were not yet cold. I think to engage the political opportunists who were dancing on their graves at that moment would have been unseemly.

If she was running for Miss Congeniality on FR I am sure that type of talk would make her shooin. But in the larger world out there - attempting to defend your self against charges of hate speech by using the phraseology used by anti-Semites for centuries is in my view unwise.

The left can point to and most certainly will, her loose cannon style, her religiously based anti-Semitism or simply further confirmation of her abysmal lack of knowledge.

Could two words be more toxic for her?

And further, what major corporatior deep pocket contributor would willing fund or even be associated in any way with a perceived anti-Semite who no doubt would not aid Israel, no matter what she professes. The left will have a field day with this. The power structure in congress are all beholden to the money men, both the left and the right, three quarters of the comedians on the major shows are Jewish.

All those with PDS will be saying “you go girl - dig deeper,” Now PDS seems to have gone viral and infected even her supporters.

I hate to be the Cassandra here.

I’d hate to think that in my thirty-odd posts I’ve developed a reputation as being “noisy”!

Also, I didn’t criticize Mrs. Palin’s politics or opinions, merely stated my opinion that I believe she’s telegraphed her intention not to run for President. I didn’t say anything about the Tea Party, the Conservative Movement or Free Republic. And, though Mrs. Palin is an integral part of all of those entities, she is not the only option, nor the living embodiment of any of them.

Sarah Palin is a noble, vital woman who has injected energy and honesty into what could have been a moribund right-wing in the post-Bush era. That does not mean she is the end-all and be-all of our movement, and legitimate criticism of her, or her actions is not an attack on Conservatism, Free Republic or America. It is, in fact, the same vigorous and spirited debate she defended in her speech today.

You couldn't sew my mind shut then either.

I'm urging you to have an open mind, and you come up with this?

I've never been able to figure out if the problem with folks who respond as you do, Syncro, is genuine lack of reading comprehension or deliberate twisting of what others say because you get off on keeping the pot stirred. Whatever, you are entitled to your point of view and I am to mine.

Just try to keep in mind that at some point if Palin does run for president, in order to win she is going to need every one of our votes along with millions of votes from independents. This early in the process, alienating people who might eventually be convinced to vote for her is not smart.

Again, are you still under the impression it was anti-Semites that coined the term "blood libel?" Sad

Sarah Palin, the Woman with Dual Loyalties Who Doesn’t Even Know about the Jewish Blood Libel?
January 12, 2011 4:18 P.M.
By Kathryn Jean Lopez

It’s worth pointing out that as governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin had an Israeli flag in her office. Harold Meyerson wrote in September 2008:

The highlight of this afternoon’s reception of the Republican Jewish Coalition at Minneapolis’ Walker Art Center, other than the spread from Wolfgang Puck, was the revelation that in an interview filmed in Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s office well before she was being considered for the national ticket, an Israeli flag was plainly visible on her wall.

“She was being interviewed by some wildlife show about hiking up glaciers,” RJC executive director Matt Brooks said, “and you could see an Israeli flag on the wall. It tells me she has Israel in her heart and in her mind.”

Meyerson, in a post titled “Dual Loyalties?,” went on to ask:

is it possible that Palin, in her heart of hearts, believes that Alaska should leave the United States and append itself to Israel?

I called it Palin Derangement Syndrome on Twitter earlier. I’m not sure how else to explain the frenzies.

This is one of the rare times that I disagree with my friends wtc911, and La Enchiladita on the subject of Palin, or anything else.

However, they are not trolls nor liberals nor haters nor anti-Semites. And they are far more thoughtful and rational and informed than most of the people here.

Libeling them and trying to get them banned is seriously sick.

You are entitled to your point of view, as I am to mine. Either way, it doesn't matter what we think. She chose to make her statement today. Time will tell what impact it will have.

I think you are way to caught up in the origination of the term.

The left uses phrases like Jim Crow, as a term to broadly brush anything they deem slightly racist, whether or not it has anything to do with Jim Crow laws or not.

This is the same thing. I had no idea what the orgination of the term “blood libel” was, until today, however, I think the term aptly applies to falsely accusing someone as having blood on their hands.

“Blood libel” was not a phrase used by anti-Semites; it was a term used to describe the ACTIONS of anti-Semites, ascribing group guilt and sinister motivation to a fictitious crime.

Please try to follow, “libel” is a falsehood, one does not usually say that they are engaged in libel when ginning up hate against a group. Do you understand that?

The “abysmal lack of knowledge” seems to be on YOUR part.

If Palin is a “perceived anti-Semite” then the person with the supposed perception is absolutely deluded and as confused and ignorant as you are.

Dersh is very liberal. However, he is strongly pro-Israel.

BTW, wtc911 is one of the finest people on this board, as is La Enchilidita.

WOW is that stupid.

A description of someones actions as being “Blood Libel” is not directed AT Jewish people, it is directed at anti-Semites who are engaged in falsely blaming Jewish people as a group for a nonexistent crime.

SO “Blood libel” has almost always been directed, not at Jewish people, but at ANTI-SEMITES.

Any other glaring inadequacies in your knowledge you need for me to clear up for you?

You are absolutely correct.

That was the knee jerk reaction the leftists were hoping for, just as her detractors here wish she would have done.

She showed restraint and watched events unfold, and waited until the haters on the left had enough rope to hang themselves.

Metaphorically speaking, of course.

Interesting that those same voices trying to get anybody who fails to toe the palin line banned will be the first to declare that the MSM wants to silence her (and Rush) because they fear her most.

ADL, SPLC and other leftists now looking for a way to get traction on this about use of blood libel as a Jewish angle and that two of victims were Jewish..to hint at antisemitism

yet conveniently NEVER mention shooter was in fact by Jewish covenant Jewish too..his mom.

had the shooter been Pentecostal or Southern Baptist it would never ever end..the howling cacophony

they will stoop to anything....would make Beria or Goebbels orgasm in delight of approval

most of today's media seriously is not much different than PRAVDA

the Left is right about one thing...a reckoning may be down the pike and they will have brought it upon themselves
