Wilmington, Delaware (CNN) -- Police have found homicide victim John Wheeler's cell phone, according to a taxi driver who was interviewed by investigators this week.

Athel Scott told CNN National Correspondent Susan Candiotti that police told him they found the cab driver's number in the phone of Wheeler, the former Pentagon official who was found dead in a Delaware landfill. He said investigators wanted to know how his number got there. Scott... says he told the police he didn't have any idea.

"I never got a call from the man. I don't know him... He's never been in my cab. I don't know how my number got in his cellphone," Scott says he told police...

Inaugural Delaware Vietnam Veterans Day pays tribute to John Wheeler

March 30, 2011

By Mark Fowser

Three months after his still-unsolved murder, the late John P. Wheeler was honored on Delaware's inaugural Vietnam Veterans Day for his contributions to his country and his lead role in establishing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington.

The ceremony at the Kent County Veterans Memorial Park in Dover included Wheeler's widow, Katherine Klyce, as well as his sister Janet Wheeler of Columbus Ohio.

A brick inscribed with Wheeler's name was unveiled and is now a permanent part of the plaza on South Little Creek Road.

Dover Mayor Carlton Carey presented Mrs. Klyce with a certificate of remembrance, while State Representative Bill Carson read a tribute from the State House of Representatives.

"It means a lot to us that people still appreciate what Jack did and acknowledge what he did, and how much he gave to his country," Klyce said.

Wheeler, who lived in New Castle, was a Vietnam veteran and chaired the Vietnam Memorial Fund. He served in the administrations of three U.S. presidents and was a consultant to a Pentagon official just prior to his death.

March 30th was declared Vietnam Veterans Day under a law passed by the General Assembly and signed by Governor Jack Markell in 2010. The withdrawal of U.S. Armed Forces from Vietnam was completed March 30th, 1973...

Murdered Federal Official Honored in Delaware

by Jeremy Tucker

March 31, 2011

DOVER, Del.- Veterans in Kent County on Wednesday honored their fallen comrades as well as murder victim John Wheeler III....

...The case remains unsolved, but that did not stop veterans from honoring Wheeler for making sure Vietnam veterans were given the respect they deserve. Wheeler played an important role in raising money to build the Vietnam War memorial in Washington D.C.

He was honored at the Kent County Veterans Memorial Park as part of the first Vietnam Veterans Day in Delaware.

...Katherine Klyce, John Wheeler's widow, was presented with tributes from lawmakers for the work of her husband.

"It's important to be here because John would want to be here himself," Klyce said. "He supported all the memorials he knew about. Anything he could help with he did."...

Thank you for posting this. The pictures and video give a better idea of the number of people who attended.

It was a beautiful ceremony which started with a bagpiper, Welcome Home to the Vets, Presentation of the Colors by Dover Air Force Base, National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance.

After the invocation, Katherine Klyce was introduced, as well as Carlton Carey Sr, Mayor of Dover and Judy Campbell of Gold Star Families. The elected officials were introduced.

Keynote speaker, Brigadier General (Ret.) Terry spoke about the Vietnam Veterans: what they faced when they came home. He spoke about John Wheeler and his dedication and vision in building the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial. The Memorial Brick for John Wheeler was unveiled and Katherine Klyce spoke to thank us all for coming and to say how much Jack would have loved to be there. There was a recent veteran death that he had wanted to memorialize and never had the chance to do it.

A wreath was placed at the Memorial and the names of all the DE troops who died in the Vietnam War were read and a bell rung after each one. There was a Benediction and Taps.

This Memorial in Dover is for all Veterans and everyone is invited to visit it.

Thank you for the reports, pictures and video of the ceremony in Delaware. Credo 2, I bet there were not many dry eyes, for Jack and every one of our Vietnam Vets. I honor each and every one of you.

I had forgotten the significance of March 30th. 1973. Wow, 38 years. So long ago but it seems as if it was just yesterday.

Keeping this thread BTT for Jack.

Re the timeline, it's pretty sketchy. If law enforcement has done a thorough investigative job (which I doubt), they should know the following:

--> Estimated time of death.

--> Cause of death, precise injuries and/or medical problems, and toxicology report.

--> If trash is picked up on that route once or twice a day, and at what time. (If the truck driver is expected to keep a log, then the time and location when he picked up that particular dumpster should be known. At minimum, they should have a good estimate to within minutes.)

--> Backtracking to find the exact dumpster, they should have been able to find some physical evidence of the body having been in it. Was other evidence present in and around the dumpster? Did they even look?

--> What security cameras at the dumpster's location showed. (Or are these also set to short time cycles.)

--> Where John's suit and other personal effects were after he (supposedly) changed clothes. For example, did they find the clothing in his home? In a hotel room? In a men's room? Did they find it at all? Even in a confused mental state, what are the odds of someone leaving an office building dressed in a suit, going home or to a hotel, changing into casual clothes, then going back to the same office building just to hang around until 8:30 at night?

--> What the body was wearing when found.

--> PRECISELY where in the building John went, if law enforcement invested the time to search and fingerprint every room (assuming John wasn't wearing gloves), and check if any tenants also have security cameras in their offices. Also if the hallways in that building have security cameras.

--> All the exits in that building, and if they are all covered by security cameras. Also what cycle the security cameras are on. The point being to determine if John entered and left the building more than once that day, or if he actually stayed in the building all day from "early afternoon" until 8:30pm.

John was already disoriented when he entered that building in his business suit. What are the odds of a person being mugged in the "early afternoon," then being murdered that same night? By different people?

The whole story, as we in the public know it from sketchy reports, is disjointed, confusing, nonsensical, and even contradictory. We have a man supposedly on his way to New York, but winding up in Delaware. Then, over days or hours, wandering the streets attempting to "fire bomb" his neighbor's house, staggering around in a downtown building, changing clothes (possibly in that same building, although video of John doesn't show him with anything except the suit he was wearing), wandering around again until his body is picked up in a dumpster. There are so many pieces of this puzzle missing that it's impossible to do anything more than speculate on what happened to this man.

One huge question I have is why law enforcement is being so closed mouthed about this case. We live in an era when almost everybody can't wait to get their faces in front of TV cameras at the slightest reason for doing so. Stand between almost any governmental authority and a camera, and you risk being trampled to death. Yet the authorities in Delaware are extremely reticent to go public with information about this case. That, to me, is very strange.

Thanks for the updates...I am so glad at least he was honored during the ceremony for vets. He deserves so much more.

Wolfstar, I have a strong feeling the Biden interference for some reason has put the kibosh on all news reporting and release of anything in this case. Very suspicious to me.

Thanks for going through all those points, very valid questions and sadly with no answers.
