A standout North Carolina high school student has been suspended for the remainder of her senior year and charged with a misdemeanor for having a small paring knife in her lunchbox.
Ashley Smithwick, 17, of Sanford told WRAL she accidentally took her father's lunchbox to Southern Lee High School in October instead of her own when school officials searched the lunchbox, along with several other students' possessions, possibly looking for drugs.
Ashley's father, Joe Smithwick told the station the lunchbox had a paring knife inside so that he could slice up an apple that accompanied it.
"It's just an honest mistake. That was supposed to be my lunch because it was a whole apple," he said.
But school officials didn't see it that way.
The athlete who takes college-level courses was suspended for the remainder for the school year, banned from campus and this month was charged with misdemeanor possession of a weapon on school grounds, WRAL reported.
Ashley says she finds the punishment particularly alarming because she's never been in trouble before.

The teachers should undergo the same scrutiny and be fired on the spot for any infraction regardless of how inconsequential.
Bookmarking...If my fellow Freepers can come up with name and numbers, I’ll blast it out to my contacts and personally start calling, but have to go to sleep in a few minutes.
Under that state’s regs, the principal can determine the punishment. As this student is an athlete, is taking college level courses, and IS WHITE - the principal applied the Leveling Principle and is making sure she can not benefit from her G*d given talents.
Gotta make sure the outcomes are the same.
Another youngster gets a much needed education in the reality of bureaucracy. She’ll remember this, for a long time to come.

Honesty and today’s school administrators are two mutually exclusive entities. IMHO
Every day I read this stuff, I am more glad we home school our two little ones. We will continue to do so as long as we can.
What a flipping outrage. She’s never been in trouble before, and they couldn’t give her the benefit of the doubt?

Yes, Equal Opportunity Education hard at work. Find any way to knock down those smart ‘privileged’ kids so the ‘under-privileged’ get moved up. Gotta meet those quotas, don’t ya know. God, please save our country.
A knife isn’t a weapon unless it’s 4 inches or longer. In some jurisdictions it’s 3 inches or longer. I doubt a little paring knife qualifies.

G*d is always on the side of the heaviest battalions and the hardest working people. It can be argued that we were given free choice and intelligence that we could make wise decisions if we studied and applied what we learned.
Obama is, arguably, America’s best educator on the subject of the dangers of socialism.
So - let’s make sure we educate our Democrat/Liberal/socialism infected friends ( and we all know some) AND get them to the polls in every election from dog catcher to POTUS.

Anyone who takes this kind of admistrative totalitarianism lying down is a fool. There are no more real schools, there is no more justice in this country. It is time to recognize it.
Fired? Criminally charged! Abuse of authority, contributing to delinquency of minors (n separate charges for n students in the school), etc.
both my boys carry knives in the pockets... so does their father... they start with Swiss Army knives and move up as they get older...
