Society Of Professional Journalists Claim 'Illegal Immigrant' Is An 'Offensive' Term Wednesday, December 29, 2010 By Eric Scheiner
The Diversity Committee of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) have announced an educational campaign against the term illegal immigrant seeking to inform reporters that the term illegal immigrant is offensive to Latinos.
In the latest issue of SPJs magazine Quill, SPJs Diversity Committee member Leo Laurence writes about the campaign referencing the National Association of Hispanic Journalists recommendation to use undocumented immigrant or undocumented worker and to Avoid using illegal(s) as a noun.
In the article Laurence also makes a constitutional argument against the term 'illegal immigrant', One of the most basic of our constitutional rights is that everyone (including non-citizens) is innocent of any crime until proven guilty in a court of law. Thats guaranteed under the Fifth, Sixth and 14th Amendments of the Constitution.
Simply put, only a judge, not a journalist, can say that someone is an illegal, Laurence adds.

Then call them illegal mexicans !!!!!
As a law-abiding American citizen, I find the presence in my country of millions of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS very offensive, but you don't hear anybody trying to inform them of that.
I find the term ‘Professional Journalists’ to be offensive. After all, it simply isn’t true and is an insult to actual writers.
If true professionalism was tested, I’d suspect the membership of this ‘Society’ would be something south of 10 and every one would turn out to be employed by Fox News.
Society of Professional Journalists is populated by maggots.
They hate people who are successful; they hate their bosses; and they hate their colleagues.
They are never happy.
They also dress very poorly.
That’s quite a concoction, isn’t it?
It reminds me of the National Press Club bar on Friday afternoons. You want to see a bunch of miserable people? Take a look sometime.
Kinda bone-chilling.
Maybe they’d prefer “illegal alien”. It suits me just fine!
I like “crimaliens”.
‘Murderer’ is offensive to murderers; ‘Rapist’ to rapists; ‘child molester’ to child molesters; ‘liberal’ to liberals, etc. etc.
Oh ... and how does the term “sleaze ball little maggots”
strike you
“Professional Journalists” is a false and misleading term.
So would they rather call them Criminal non-citizens?
Law-breaking immigrants, trespassing immigrants, illegal trespassers.
But the term “Teabagger” is not offensive in any way.
I am offended at them.
how about WOP or Wet Back?
American People Claim ‘Illegal Immigrant’ Is An ‘Offensive’ neighbor
Shouldn’t take a judge to determine that. No visa, no passport, no BC showing you’re a citizen then you’re here illegally. I’m not promoting that US citizens carry their BC with them.
No problem, lets just return to the traditional descriptions.
“Illegal Immigrant” is a self contradicting nonsense PC term anyway.
“Wet-back’s”, “Invader’s”, “Illegal Alien’s”,”Wog’s”, “Criminal trespassers” “Greaser’s” etc. all work fine for me!
I am sure I missed a few, maybe we should compile a complete list and send it to these PC morons for their edification?
...but they’ll still call us “Tea Baggers”, “Hatemongers” and “racists” right?
Can’t imagine where someone would think they have a political bias...
