Charles Krauthammer: Obama’s New Start - Republicans no longer have the wind at their backs.

Obama's New Start
Republicans no longer have the wind at their backs.

Riding the lamest of ducks, President Obama just won the Triple Crown. He fulfilled (1) his most important economic priority, passage of Stimulus II, a.k.a. the tax-cut deal (the perfect pre-reelection fiscal sugar high — the piper gets paid in 2013 and beyond); (2) his most important social-policy objective, repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell”; and (3) his most cherished (achievable) foreign-policy goal, ratification of the New START treaty with Russia.

Politically, these are all synergistic. The bipartisan nature of the tax deal instantly repositioned Obama back to the center. And just when conventional wisdom decided the deal had caused irreparable alienation from his liberal base, Obama almost immediately won it back — by delivering one of the gay-rights movement’s most elusive and coveted breakthroughs.

The symbolism of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal cannot be underestimated. It’s not just that for the civil-rights community, it represents a long-awaited extension of the historic arc — first blacks, then women, now gays. It was also Obama decisively transcending the triangulated trimming of Bill Clinton, who instituted “don’t ask, don’t tell” in the first place. Even more subtly and understatedly, the repeal represents the taming of the most conservative of the nation’s institutions, the military, by a movement historically among the most avant-garde. Whatever your views, that is a cultural landmark...

Heh.

I am a FEMALE.

Again, been on FreeRepublic for ten years. Also am on the FreeRepublic welcoming committee for new members, served as moderator once.

But you’re having a ball. I expressed an opinion. It was innocuous one and in no way any endorsement of any homosexual agenda.

Maybe I’ll get zotted but I kind of doubt it. In fact, I think YOU are the one that is starting to look stupid.

Again, I disagreed that repeal of DADT is any big deal as Krauthammer asserts. I did NOT and do NOT agree with any homosexual agenda, never have, never will.

Meanwhile I’m going to have a little talk with the moderator myself cause by me you’re way out of line here. Nobody died and made you boss of this forum.

You can continue with the insults but I’ll not answer.

This change was made by a Congress and a President. It can be changed again. And, no, the draft will not be reinstituted to make up for shortfalls if the DA/DT repeal damages recruitment and retention, especially as the military will probably be somewhat smaller in the future.

Clearly you are politically naive at best. Once instituted in the military and thousands come out of their filthy closets, how the hell will they ever reinstate it? Are you nuts? A draft would be 1000X easier. No this is one sh!t sandwich we are all going to have to learn to swallow.

Definitely you should be bothering Jim Robinson and report this guy.

In fact, report anybody you disagree with to Jim Robinson. He really loves that kind of thing.

got that right! Throw in Rove, Kondracke, Romney, McCain,, Graham, Corker, Alexander, etc. The Tea Party needs to get stronger. We need to stick to our guns and insist
that all “inside the beltway” parasites and elitists are thrown out. Palin is one of the few personages that is trying to stay faithful to Tea Party principles. We need “real” people doing real governance representing the real people in “flyover” Averica.

Well I’ll agree you’re right about the housing thing. I’d also agree, I guess, that it wasn’t a “normal” turndown but my major point is that it was hardly any end of the world event that Obama and his minions made it out to be.

Nobody made me the boss but I have seen what constitutes soft peddling the gay agenda. And your comment plays right into it. If I am out of line I will be the first to apologize. Some how Miss "nothing burger" I don't think I will have to. Have a Merry Christmas.

I won't speak for him but on the gay agenda, my guess he would like to know.

You've really gone hysterical over this issue. It's definitely a negative event, but your reaction is long on hyperbole and short on common sense. If this causes significant problems in the military, changes will be made. Believe whatever you choose to believe. Time will tell.

Central_va, don’t you have something better to do on Christmas Eve than play zot Nazi? Unless you yourself are a troll stirring the pot.

The military will deal with this by accelerating the roboticization of the battlefield and the removal of human troops therefrom. There will be a sort of race between that and the homosexualization of the officer corps and total control of the military by the whims of federal judges. The worst near term effect of this will be the insertion of the federal judiciary into every aspect of military life and mission. If homosexualization and legal chaining outpaces the robots then we will have a period when we are unable to project force beyond our borders and our military will be far more useful against the citizenry than against foreign enemies.
Homosexuals have already transcended one of the most basic foundations of right and wrong in Western Civilization and are much more inwardly directed-selfish as it were- than normal folks and will have no qualms about enforcing the CinC’s whims against the population. They will be as effective at that as Germany’s homosexually led SS was. Germany split military functions by sexuality. The terror corps, mostly internal and behind the lines was homosexual. The armies in the field were not.

I did four years active at sea and 11 years USNR. Gays openly flaunting their crap on a ship ain't going to work.

If obamacare is not totally repealed or struck down it will grow back up in all its splendor and medical care for nonaffluent old folks will disappear and become ever more scarce for everyone else who has not the ability to go offshore or who is not politically connected.

Any improvement in the economy means landslide re-election ans possible super-majority for Statist/Totalitarian Democrat party, guaranteed. Put it in stone.

There`s no RINO/GOP candidate that ‘sounds’ better in front of a microphone and that is what impresses the shallow voter the most not ideology. The ordinary voter has been de-educated via govt schools and is easily manipulated and bought off with largesse .

Time to put Krauthammer off in a corner for a while. He views gays mouthing off (among other things) in the barracks as a civil rights objective.

He's gone nuts!

Look, there are folks out there with borderline personality disorder. They like to take people in wheelchairs and flip them down stairs. They can't help themselves. If Obama had gotten legislation through to allow them to do that without penalty of law Krauthammer would probably not consider that a civil rights victory ~ at least not for long.
