Rochester, N.Y. – The City of Rochester has about 3,000 vacant buildings. Several of them have new occupants – homeless people – who moved in, changed the locks, and turned on the lights.

Legally, they’re known as “squatters,” people who live in a place without a deed or tenant agreement. They’ve been living in the houses for months without anyone noticing.

“It’s just wonderful to have a house, to have heat, to have food in your refrigerator,” said a woman who moved into a three-bedroom house last week with her two children, including a 3-week-old newborn.

http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Squatters+rights

A method of gaining legal title to real property by the actual, open, hostile, and continuous possession of it to the exclusion of its true owner for the period prescribed by state law.

A Trespass may commence adverse possession, but there must be more than temporary use of the property by a trespasser for adverse possession to be established. Physical acts must show that the possessor is exercising the dominion over the land that an average owner of similar property would exercise. Ordinary use of the property—for example, planting and harvesting crops or cutting and selling timber—indicates actual possession. In some states acts that constitute actual possession are found in statute.

Open and Notorious An adverse possessor must possess land openly for all the world to see, as a true owner would. Secretly occupying another’s land does not give the occupant any legal rights. Clearing, fencing, cultivating, or improving the land demonstrates open and notorious possession, while actual residence on the land is the most open and notorious possession of all. The owner must have actual knowledge of the adverse use, or the claimant’s possession must be so notorious that it is generally known by the public or the people in the neighborhood. The notoriety of the possession puts the owner on notice that the land will be lost unless he or she seeks to recover possession of it within a certain time.

"Why do you trouble me with such things! The poor are always with us. Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's. Render unto the Lord that which is his." Close to the actual verse anyway."

Give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day (and he'll be back with his friends and relatives tomorrow wanting more free fish); Teach a man to fish and you'll feed him for life.

We've got too many people wanting to be fed, too few fishermen.

Thanks for the info. I am not going to ask you about being sued for inhabitability issues, as I am sure your response would put me in deep depression. I have to leave this computer now and go get some work done so I can pay taxes to support those who don’t pay taxes.

Squatters generally just hot-wire the fuse box and cut the lock on the gas.

They’re living in someone else’s property and stealing from the utility companies.

The woman said the house is hers. “You ride around you see how many houses are for sale or vacant or boarded up, so why wouldn’t you want me to stay there instead of it just sitting there?” she said. “It’s a better solution for both of us.”

We used to cut them off at the pole with repeat offenders. In fact, one co-worker used to not just cut the service conductors, but cut a couple of feet of wire so that they could not climb the pole and reconnect the ends together (yes, it has happened).

Just think - when you faithfully pay your gas and electric bill each month, you're paying theirs as well.

I’m always amazed that people with no ties (unemployed and property-less, legal and illegal immigrants) chose to move to, or stay in, places like MN, or WI or the upper Midwest.

See: Somalians, Hmong, Mexicans and Latin Americans.

Culture shock and climate shock, not to mention the added travel hassle to get to the center of the continent.

My greatest fear is the following scenario. The current trend is to move “people” out of the projects to better safer neighborhoods. Now since the bailouts the government owns banks. Put two and two together and what have you got? Let’s move these poor disadvantaged into foreclosed homes. This way they can maintain the homes the same way they helped maintain the projects. It’s just not fair that these big homes just go to waste. So now that foreclosed million dollar home next door to you becomes a welfare hotel. Bringing the drugs and crime they claimed they wanted to leave behind.
So while you struggle to pay your bills they loaf around all day looking for ways to screw the man including you.

Treat them the same as roaches, animals in the attic or mice in the basement. Trap, squash and fumigate.

Whe is paying the utilities? I could not get the power turned on on my own, paid in full, house without deeds, tax receipts and a credit check.

I think that depends on your state laws and who your utility is.

The charity may be taking on that responsibility, paying the deposits. It could also funnel payments without the squatters having to show documentation they do not have.

From the article:
“Take Back the Land Rochester’s primary concern is not what’s legal and illegal, but what’s moral and immoral,” said Acuff. “We believe it’s immoral to have people out on the street, especially in Rochester’s winter especially during the holiday season.”

It’s not what is legal and illegal...sounds like DhimmiRat Philosophy applied to sheltering the homeless: Everything is OK as long as someone else is paying the bill, and the poor victims can survive on the efforts of others.

I’m sick to death of this socialist crappola. If they want a socialist utopia they need to head off to one that’s further down the path to their insane nirvana. Maybe Venezuela, or Mexico (they can sneak in; I hear the border is pretty porous). Maybe even Canada?

These folks are criminals, pure and simple.

“We believe it’s immoral to have people out on the street, especially in Rochester’s winter especially during the holiday season.”

And I believe that it's immoral to steal, which is exactly what these punks are doing. Throw them out on the street - they'll either learn to earn their keep or disappear, but either way, it will be THEIR choice.

correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t they just following the advice of their own member of Congress, Louise Slaughter, to go and do this?

The end of private property in America: ACORN (almost certainly the unnamed “national organization in the story) takes over other people’s houses and moves squatters into them; and people (like me) so upside-down on their mortgages that essentially, we are essentially paying rent on our own house.
