Bears-Vikings game proves safety is secondary (NFL WHINE ALERT)

Old-time football players like to say they would’ve played for free in the parking lot, such was their love for the game.

It might be the hyperbole of men who watched too many grainy Knute Rockne clips, but you want to believe that they believe it. You want to believe that they were so tough and so committed to the game that they would’ve sacrificed the skin on their elbows to make a tackle near the third parking stall on the left.

You want to believe in someone who loved the raw violence of a sport so much that he would’ve been willing to sacrifice body and paycheck to play it. You want to believe in his craziness and passion.

You want to believe mostly because it wasn’t your body or your brain or your skinned elbows.

That might explain the gap in emotions between the public and Bears and Vikings players heading into a game tonight that very well could be played on a skating rink.

The players are worried and angry about the possibility of injury at the University of Minnesota’s football stadium, which was jarred out of its winter slumber by a caved-in roof at the Metrodome eight days ago.

The public? Not so worried. Or, if fans are worried about players’ injuries, it’s not for humanitarian reasons. It’s for playoff reasons.

Oops. If you are going to give history lessons on FreeRepublic, it pays to do a little extra homework.

Just heard a great line about the kicker who made this complaint on ESPN Radio: “The are only two times when you should listen to a kicker. When they are talking about kicking or when they are talking about online shopping.”

Or Alex Karass' famous line about Garo Yepremian celebrating an extra point by shouting "I Keeck a Touchdown!"

Now, apparently, they are the Periwinkle Pansy Nibblers

So would Bud Grant.

I always liked Bud Grant. His teams were as tough and well-disciplined as any. I wish he could've gotten a Super Bowl win.

And Giant linemen were out on the field in shorts 90 minutes before any Packers player showed up to “warm-up”.

That's probably why we lost, in addition to Favre being awful.

Ahh, that brings back mmories. Saw them play at the old Met in Jan. of 1970; the NFC championship game, which they won.

But they couldn't stop the "65 Toss Power Trap."

Apparently the "Nibblers" were under the impression the repeal of DADT applied to them, too!

They will be at the game for a ceremony at halftime!

Maybe the presence of the top 50 Viking of all time will inspire the purple toinght.

The whining Bears don’t deserve to win the division here tonight.

They played in both I & II, and won both.

EFF the NFL. They love Obama, smeared Rush as a racist and love their dog killing felon. It is a shame that a guy like Brady has to play in a league with a POS thug like Vick.

Exactly. Looked pretty cold in Foxborro when the Pats edged out my Packers last night. You can bet the field will be just as brutal in Green Bay in a couple of weeks when the Bears come up to Lambeau. As Michael Strahan said yesterday, “Frozen Tundra” is truth in advertising, and not just in Lambeau Field. He went so far as to say that heating systems on the field make no difference worth mentioning.

The whiners for both teams ought to be ashamed. But it’s 2010.. and they won’t be.

I’m going to that Bears game on 1/2. Hoping the Pack can take care of business vs. Giants this Sunday; if they do, beating da Bears would put them in the playoffs. Can’t even imagine what that atmosphere would be like!!

Years ago I once played on the artificial turf that was the surface of UNT's (then was known as NTSU) Fouts Field... it was like a thin layer of felt on top of concrete.

The field at Minn. I'm sure will be more forgiving than that Fouts Field's surface.

P.S. Fouts Field saw its last game a few weeks ago... the Mean Green Eagles are moving to new digs across Interstate 35 (Denton, TX).
