Old-time football players like to say they wouldve played for free in the parking lot, such was their love for the game.
It might be the hyperbole of men who watched too many grainy Knute Rockne clips, but you want to believe that they believe it. You want to believe that they were so tough and so committed to the game that they wouldve sacrificed the skin on their elbows to make a tackle near the third parking stall on the left.
You want to believe in someone who loved the raw violence of a sport so much that he wouldve been willing to sacrifice body and paycheck to play it. You want to believe in his craziness and passion.
You want to believe mostly because it wasnt your body or your brain or your skinned elbows.
That might explain the gap in emotions between the public and Bears and Vikings players heading into a game tonight that very well could be played on a skating rink.
The players are worried and angry about the possibility of injury at the University of Minnesotas football stadium, which was jarred out of its winter slumber by a caved-in roof at the Metrodome eight days ago.
The public? Not so worried. Or, if fans are worried about players injuries, its not for humanitarian reasons. Its for playoff reasons.

Watching these overpaid babies fall on their butts might be entertaining. I may even watch a few minutes of this game.
Please... Nothing is happening in Minneapolis that doesn’t / won’t /can’t happen at any other outdoor venue this time of year, in similar climates in the bleeping NFL. Bunch of pansies.
You should get your wish...it’s coming down pretty where I’m at....
Two words. Ice Bowl. When football was played by men.
pretty GOOD that is..
I don’t think there will be any booze(unless you sneak your own in)
What a wuss...
Do the University of MN players whine like that??? How about the Green Bay Packers??? Is the whining coming just from the Vikings or the Bears, too? I'd be surprised if it weren't confined to the Vikings... er.. "Vikings."
Somewhere, these guys are shaking their heads in disgust...
It's called "Soldier Field".
I’m down in White Bear today. Haven’t looked out the window for a while. I’ll take your word (verified by the radar) for it.
That's not true - outdoor deep-cold stadiums such as Lambeau and Soldier Field have heating systems in the turf. Ever hear of the Ice Bowl? It's when that system failed at Lambeau.
And the players have a point - the NFL is cracking down on hits to the head, but apparently aren't concerned about a player falling on his head onto a hard field.
Ice Bowl was when the turf heating system failed.
And it was the last game of the season so players had plenty of time to recover.
That is a point. They did not include turf heaters to save money when they built this stadium.
Yeah, they have heaters... heaters can fail. Big whoop. Conditions are what they are. They can play, or move it. Just quit bitchin’. :)
True. But football played by women looks interesting. I'm waiting for it to come to a venue near me. :-)
And no, I don't think that Mrs. WBill will be invited.
The bitter cold overwhelmed Lambeau's new turf heating system, leaving the playing surface hard as a rock and nearly as smooth as ice.
