The military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy regarding gays in the military is over. The lame-duck Senate passed legislation ending the policy today by the overwhelming margin of 65-31; all that awaits is President Obama's signature, which is a certainty. The legislation couldn't have passed without Republicans, including the Tea Party insurgent Scott Brown and Ron Kirk, who won Obama's old Illinois seat in November. It fell to the doddering old war hero and loser of 2008, John McCain, to argue against the policy (and McCain's position was undermined by his wife's and his daughter's public opposition to DADT).
The end of DADT will be hailed as a groundbreaking achievement, like the racial desegregation of the military in 1948. But race is an involuntary characteristic that becomes irrelevant so long as the minority service member conforms to the military's behavioral and performance norms. Proclaiming one's sexual orientation and acting upon it is voluntary, not involuntary. Thus, homosexuals will be given not equality, but preferential treatment, based on chosen behavior. Why, then, draw the line at homosexuality? Why should the military discriminate against service members who announce proclivities for transsexuality, polygamy, bestiality or pedophilia?
What will be the effect of the end of DADT? The short-term effects will probably be minimal. The military won't be overrun by homosexuals anytime soon. It's unlikely that very many gays, who constitute a tiny fraction of the population, want to serve in the military anyway. But the cultural shift in the military will be dramatic. The military will be forced to deal with issues like anti-gay discrimination (real or imagined), how to deal with transsexuals, gay marriage, and benefits for gay partners. There will be gay affirmative-action quotas, gay cliques and subcultures, and you can be sure that in the future, there'll be some gay equivalent of the "Tailhook" scandal. A military that is in the process of losing it's second decade-long war in Asia to ragtag insurgents needs none of this. But the military, with its "can-do" ethos, will deal with it.
The consequences for cultural conservatism are much more acute, though. Repeal of DADT means that homosexuality will officially no longer constitute "conduct unbecoming" of a professional soldier. This amounts to a de facto sanction of homosexuality as normal and acceptable.
With the repeal of DADT, cultural conservatives will no longer control any institutions in American society. The military, the last bastion of cultural conservatism to which Americans rallied en masse after 9/11, has now been conscripted by the Left. The military is the final institution to fall in what Roger Kimball described as the "Long March" of cultural Leftism through America's institutions that began in the Sixties. The academy, the churches, the courts and the government have long since fallen.
In the 30 years since the election of Reagan, cultural conservatives have failed to overturn Roe v. Wade, suppress pornography, stop gay marriage, or make a serious dent in the use of illegal drugs. Conservative activist Paul Weyrich noted that Clinton's high public approval rating in the wake of the Lewinsky sex scandal meant that a "Moral Majority" no longer existed in the U.S.
Polls indicating overwhelming public support for ending DADT reaffirm that Weyrich's observation was surely correct.
Lets look at what the Founding fathers believed about homosexuality:
How many Americans realize that Commander in Chief of the continental Army george Washington during the American revolution War, was apprised of ahomosexual in the Army The response of General Washington was immediate and decisive. He issued “general Order” from Army Headquarters at Valley Forge on Staurday march 14, 1778:
At a general court marital whereof Colo Tupper was President (10th March 1778) Lieutt.Enslin of Colo. Malcolm’s regiment tried for attempting to commit sodomy, with John Monhort a soldier: secondly, for perjury in swearing false accounts, found guilty of the charges exhibited against him, being breaches of 5th article 18th Section of the Articles of War and do sentence him to be dismiss’d the service with infamy. His excellency the commander in chief approves the sentence and with abbhorrence and detestation of such infamous crimes orders Lieutt. Enslin to be drummed out of camp tomorrow morning by all drummers and fifer in the Army never to return.
Homosexuality was treated as a criminal offense in all of the orginal thirteen colonies, and eventually every one of the fifty states see Robinson, 2003; Sodomy Laws. (I believe the laws were changed in 1961 by the Supreme Court).
Severe penalties were invoked for those who engaged in homosexuality. In fact, few Americans know that the penalty for homosexuality in several states was death - including New York, Vermont, Connecticut and South Carolona (barton, 200 pp 306, 482) Most people nowadays would be shocked to learn that Thomas jefferson advocated “dismemberment’ as the penalty for homosexuality in his home state of Virginia, and even uthored a bill to that effect 1781, Query 14, cf. 1903 , 1:226-227).
The Founding fathers of these Unitd sates would be incredulous, incensed and outraged. They understood that acceptance of homosexuality would undermine and erode the moral foundations of civilization> Sodomy the longtime historical term for same-sex relations, was a capital crime under British common law. Sir William Blackstone, British attorney, jurist, law professor, and political philospher, autored his monumental Commentaries on the Laws of England from 1765-1769. These commentaries became the premiere legal source admired and used by America’s Founding Fathers in the Fourt Book capter 15 ‘offences Against Persons of Individuals pages 215-216
He took his understanding of the Jewish destruction of Sodom and Gommorrah of fire from heaven because of the crimes committed in Sodom and Gommorah(genesis 19)
i like how in the usage of the: agentes et confentientntes pari poena plecantur advocates and conspirators should be punished with like punishment he wrote the following a crime not fit to be named : peccatum illud horribile, inter chriftianos non nominandum “that horrible sin not to be named among christians”
I am hoping this gives an understanding of how the founding fathers, George washington and Thomas jefferson through the understanding of Blackstone regarding homosexuality.
It was in 1961 that the laws of america changed regarding homosexuality.
Those who disregard/ignore/don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.
Because now they will have their lawyers suing people for 'hate speech'/discrimination and out of court settlements, special treatment and extortion will be the norm. Not to mention the anti-American anti-military agenda of the militant guy lobby celebrating as this causes havoc in the ranks.
Here is the changes regarding Sodomy Laws
1961 Illinois was the first state to repeal its sodomy Laws.
1986 Bowers v Hardwick upholding of Georgia’s sodomy Law
1996 Romer v Evans overthrowing Colorado’s Amendment 2 which prohibited the granting of equal civil rights and protections to gays and lesbians
2003 Lawernce v Texas declaring all states sodomy laws unconstitutional and laying the foundations for massive further changes across the USA
God Help the USA to see the errors that it has made.
I guess the Mexicans and Blacks don’t realize that they will
always be in the back of the Democratic bus behind white
homosexuals?
The captain picked on me because I’m a queer!
Sexual harrassment gone crazy.

oop’s, sorry
Then we civilians would know who it is appropriate to say "thanks for your service" to when encountering them in uniform in the airport or shopping mall!!
I agree with the article: we have lost. I am finding it increasingly difficult to stick around day by day in this world which has turned against God.
To make Rules for the Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces.
If a court had overturned DADT it would have been a violation of the Separation of Powers that has already been rendered null and void by political parties since party loyalty trumps loyalty to the Republic. Last election not withstanding, it appears we are still waiting
The public supports TV and Hollywood. They can terrorize any Republican willing to stand up to them. Keep watching TV and hollywood movies. Prince Al Waleed’s Fox News is not our friend. The other networks are even worse.
Americans traded liberty for TV clicker. I was in a local breakfast place and they had the local paper. I just glanced at the front page for a second. Attacking GOP for stopping amnesty, pro repeal of DADT, fawning over a female black high school student with a baby and no husband. Just pathetic. The media gets no money from me. The NFL, NBA, MLB, NCAA, and ESPN love Hussein. No Tv - no media.
They all support the agenda.
Where are the idiots here on FR who attacked LTC Lakin? Things are only going to get worse. There has to be a way to overturn this.
And you can bet now the majority of military lawyers and judges will eventually be flamers, so good luck pursuing harassment against them.
If you have a cable or sat TV account or watch Hollywood’s crappy movies then you are supporting the agenda.
Over a year ago - I nuked TV and will never have it again. TV, newspapers, movies and others do not get a nickel. The only movies I probably will watch are things like the German film - “The Lives of Others.” It attacked East German communism and the corruption that came with it. It looks a lot like Hussein’s America.
The NFL, NBA. MLB, NCAA, ESPN and ALL Tv supports Hussein. Americans traded liberty for a TV clicker.
Ca. 1775-2010: "The captain picked on me because Im a queer!"
Ca. 2011: "The captain picked on me because Im NOT a queer!"
In January 2013, President Palin should issue an executive order that rescinds “gays in the military” — or more properly, restores the status quo to the policies in effect as of 1992 (even before “don’t ask, don’t tell”).
It’s as simple as that.
Gays who happen to be _in_ the military in 2013, who choose to serve “openly as gays”, should be offered two choices:
- choose to voluntarily resign and be processed out with Honorable discharges, or,
- if they refuse to resign voluntarily, they should be issued General discharges and removed from service.
Military commanders up to and including the level of General officers who protest should be summarily removed from their commands, as well.
Let the left howl.
Let the Congress dare to act. We will have strong majorities by then, I predict Congressional action will go nowhere.
This is what it will take. Nothing less.
If you’re not prepared to support such harsh actions, better swallow the concept “gays in the military”. We’ll be stuck with it forever.
