Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Saturday that the failed Democratic effort to pass the DREAM Act in the lame duck session dealt a blow to future talks on a wider immigration bill.
It was an exercise to try and taint Republicans with Hispanic voters, knowing that the DREAM Act under these circumstances could never pass, Graham told reporters in the Capitol after the bill sputtered on the floor.
What they have done on the DREAM Act is hurt overall comprehensive immigration reform, he said.
The DREAM Act, which would give legal status to illegal immigrants who came to the country at a young age, lived here for at least five years, graduated from high school and attended college or served in the military, fell five votes short of the 60 needed to overcome a GOP-led filibuster 55 to 41.
Graham has worked with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) in the past to try and seek a Capitol Hill compromise on a wider reform plan -- one that would blend increased enforcement and border security with a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, among other measures.
He said the DREAM Act effort will make it harder to bridge divides on immigration, noting the impassioned advocacy on both sides of the issue.
Our base is all riled up that this is amnesty, so you have taken a debate on immigration, one part of it, you have gotten people emotional before you can sit down and reason your way through a comprehensive bill, Graham said. Doing this vote the way they did it has hurt the ability to do comprehensive reform next year to some extent.
Thanks for your support. Patriots are lining up to take back our country.
Semper Fi and Merry Christmas, FRiend.
Tea party target Graham. He is anxious to make illegal immigrants citizens.
Pray tell Linds, why do you think a Boehner led House would have an interest in tackling amnesty next year? Do you know something we don’t or is this wishful thinking. Because I was under the impression based on Boehner’s own words their priorities were to reduce spending, reduce debt and dismantle Obamacare. Oh, and some of them want to have fun on the side by investigating the W.H. This hasn’t been on his public priority list that I’m aware of.
Graham is so determined to screw up America. 2014 cannot come sooner enough
Most Americans know that Comprehensive Immigration Reform is Illegal Alien Amnesty. Idiot Graham better get a clue
I agree with the sentiment.
We barely stopped amnesty with a Republican government a few years ago. It was a vicious fight but we won.
Had the Democrats chosen to proceed with that first we may not have stopped it this time. Obamacare is bad, but still there is hope by striking down the individual mandate in the courts and cutting funding. There is no possible way we’d be able to undo an amnesty once granted.
Actually, there is a need for comprehensive immigration reform. Things will never get better otherwise. But it’s got to be immigration reform that favors the US and doesn’t have put anybody else’s interests ahead of ours.
I’d be happy to legalize lots of Latin Americans (who actually do work and are no different from all the other poor immigrant groups - Irish, Italians, Germans and Eastern European Jews - who arrived here, learned English in the second generation, and rose to the top by the third generation) in exchange for having no more Muslim immigrants, ever, and immediately kicking out any Muslim visa overstayer, any Muslim on welfare or any Muslim who has gotten here under “family reunion.”
But I’m willing to bet that what we’ll get will be something that will kick out the Latin Americans and bring in more Muslims. Mark my words.
That might make some Freepers (who hate Latin Americans) happy, but it’s going to destroy our country. Latin Americans don’t want to change the US, but Muslims do. Yet I’m willing to bet that they’re what the Dems and the RINOs are going to bring us.
“He said the DREAM Act effort will make it harder to bridge divides on immigration, noting the impassioned advocacy on both sides of the issue.”
Don’t much give a sht about the other side on this issue as the only side that counts is the American side.
This is about illegality, not origin.
It is disturbing a FReeper should play the race card.

DeMint need to take the Lindsey out behind the wood shed.

"John, we have to pass immigration reform."
Poppycock. Ever heard of the Reconquista?
This guy, Graham....every penny I can spare, I will spend to defeat him. Every minute I can spend on phones and at peoples doors I will use to defeat him. I will do everything that I can to defeat this traitor to the Constitution. He will be taken down if we all do everything that we can to destroy him.
Do not leave out Dubya, Jeb, Myth and KARL ROVE!!!
He says it like it's a bad thing.
I hope and pray that SC is watching Miss Priss, and will primary him the next time he’s up for re-election.
