Captain Beefheart, a.k.a. Don Van Vliet, dies at 69

Avant-garde rock legend and visual artist Don Van Vliet, who performed under the name Captain Beefheart, passed away today at age 69. A representative of New York City’s Michael Werner Gallery, which hosted several shows of his paintings, confirms the sad news to EW. Van Vliet died of complications from multiple sclerosis at a hospital in Northern California this morning.

Yup, Willie the Pimp, and the original Torture Never Stops (not the version on Zoot Allures). Something about his voice setup Frank so well for those extra long solos.

I never listened to the Captain, but I just spent a few minutes on YouTube. Good stuff.
One of my favorite bands is Pere Ubu; David Thomas was obviously influenced by Captain Beefheart.

Got to see the Doc at the Radar Station incarnation of the Magic Band (1978-ish?). I crank up “Kandy Korn” on the stero every Halloween, much to my children’s dismay.
He always was ahead of his time (and still is).

I actually prefer Safe As Milk to Trout Mask Replica. More concise and focused.

Excellent. It’s always a good idea to subject children and spouses to Beefheart at full blast. They will learn to fear you if nothing else!
