Democrats controlling the Senate have abandoned a 1,924-page catchall spending measure that's laced with homestate pet projects known as earmarks and that would have provided another $158 billion for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Nevada Democrat Harry Reid gave up on the nearly $1.3 trillion bill after several Republicans who had been thinking of voting for the bill pulled back their support.
GOP leader Mitch McConnell threw his weight against the bill in recent days, saying it was in his words "unbelievable" that Democrats would try to muscle through in just a few days legislation that usually takes months to debate.
Reid said he would work with McConnell to produce a short-term funding bill to keep the government running into early next year.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
WASHINGTON (AP) - The top Senate Republican has offered a one-page bill to prevent a government shutdown on Saturday as an alternative to a 1,924-page catchall spending measure offered by Democrats.
Kentucky Republican Mitch McConnell says it's unbelievable that Democrats want to pass the measure in just a few days as Christmas approaches. He says Congress should pass a less costly bill next year - when Republicans will have more leverage.

**** you, Reid, you *****y son of a *****.
It is all part of Pelosi and Reid's stated strategy:
"Leave a mess for the Republicans."
I want to know why the Republicans would even think of voting for this.
I’m not sure I believe this. It will be back in different form next week.
So threatening them to read it actually worked?

11 months of sitting on their thumbs and now it’s an emergency.
I thought McConnell was brilliant in how he handled it with his one page spending bill through Feb 18.
The GOP is playing a brilliant game and I’m curious to see how DADT plays out before the end of the term.
I can't help but notice that Hairy Reed decided to pull his stupid spending bill when McConnell suggested a one page resolution.
Reed knows that NEXT YEAR he will have difficulty getting anything passed by the Senate through the House if he goes ahead with this nonsense.
LIBs/DIMs...Bwaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Those mutants deserve eternal shame and damnation.
Now read EVERY other pending bill, in full, aloud, every page and comma!
Better yet, just leave, and deprive the dims of a quorum, forcing everything to go on hold until the new congress is seated.
I’m sick of what they are trying to do, and not just the visible crap!
The contrived “recess appointment” of that anti-RKBA lunatic Travers to head BATFE (ATF) is an insufferable scheme too.
Shut down government for lack of a budget?
Big deal, been done before, no real harm.
Great news!!!!
Almost hard to believe! They hardly ever give up on anything.
Apparently the liberals puppet masters have looked at the time remaining on the clock, and ordered them to drop it so they can get other equally menacing things passed....
Im not sure I believe this. It will be back in different form next week.
It will be slipped into the DADT bill.
Mitch McConnell and the Senate GOP need to hear our praise on this one. McConnell played it great and they’ll be even stronger moving forward into 2012.
“The GOP is playing a brilliant game and Im curious to see how DADT plays out before the end of the term.”
What? a brilliant game? I about spit out my wine!
Sounds good, but you gotta watch for those Trojan horses...
I don’t believe it unless the rats have an even more vindictive Christmas present to give us on Christmas Eve.
Pelosi and Reid are looking like crypt keeers
Ok All am I dreaming? They (Dems-Reid) backed down and now just the extension is the name of the game? I just cannot believe my eyes so I would like some conformation of my understanding...
Whenever conservatives push republicans into standing up and showing some backbone they do well when they challange democrats.
The next morning when they wake up their minds are blank and they start looking for another place to surrender.
