Got a spare $5,500 lying around that you want to get rid of? If every single San Franciscan coughed up that amount, we could pay City Hall's retiree health care bill - for now anyway.
A new report from the controller's office shows the city has an unfunded retiree health care liability of $4.36 billion. That means it'll cost that much to pay the promised health care benefits for every current employee and retiree - and that number will keep growing as health care costs rise. By 2033, the tab will be a whopping $9.7 billion.
Guess how much the city has saved to pay down the costs so far? You guessed it. Nuthin'.

Politicians have no incentive not to spend like crazy, its not their money
Yet one more reason democrats are trying to drive people back into cities and restrict people’s ability to live in the burbs and rural areas.
They are trying to stop people from leaving. They have enormous bills and the people will eventually just want to leave. Dems are setting it up so that it’s much harder to leave cities. Can’t have the wallets leaving on us now.
They’ll just do the same thing Obama intends to do - put everyone on Medicaid.
SF is a pathetic excuse for a city. They could have it all, but the choose to throw money away and then while about it. I suspect they will just let Obamacare handle the problem. In fact that was probably the plan all along.
What a legacy left by Newsom!
And we Californians voted him into a higher position...we’re going out in flames here
No kidding. Plus they pay for all transexual operations including psychotherapy to help them cope with it. There was a bill to pay for all inmates transexual operations as well, can’t remember if it passed.
When they started paying for sex change operations, I figured they must have money coming out of their ears.
They done screwed up!
BTW, urban planners aren't handmaidens to Democrat obermeisters who want to drive people into the cities ~ they're usually involved in efforts to "thin out the herd". Now a long time ago there were some who had this theory that people ought to have a place to live downtown so they could patronize theater, etc.
Television screwed that idea up. Then, the home computer came along and that put an end to the idea you had to live "downtown" to have a good time. In fact, you can live out in the woods and have a good time.
Here's how it is these days ~ look up "FLY IN A HOOKER" and you'll find that the #1 item displayed by Google.com is titled "Don't Pay A Female Escort Ashley Madison Affairs Guaranteed 100% Secure, Anonymous, Free!"
You don't even have to stop curbside!
I didn't check to see if these gals parachute in or what ~ but when you have stuff like that going on NO ONE is trying to herd you into a city.
Let it fail.
.
Government has billions and trillions of our money. The problem is they spend billions and trillions more then they take from us.
Bump.
Only a total collapse wil save us.
“The problem is they spend billions and trillions more then they take from us.”
They want more taxes, but they can’t tell us where it’s going and they’ve proven they’ll always spend more than they take in.
Not to worry, they will begin collecting fines for pissing on the side walks and streets
I live here, I pay property taxes here, and I hate it.
That is just silly. A broken toy never works.
We are fine with a few changes, it takes time but we are winning and, will get there. We have a generation of corruption, greed, self loathing and failure taught to them.
This is changing. Remember, losing is not an option, change is.
Come on, give them a break. They are working on really important issues....like toys in Happy Meals.
Its basic math. There is no way to pay for this.
