Food Storage Shortage Risk Emerging (Prepper Ping!)

Next, I called Mountain House. They report this current level of demand is 'unprecedented' in their history. On top of that, they feel they usually can anticipate spikes like this given macro events, but this time the arrival and intensity of the demand caught them by surprise. They've already stopped selling #10 cans on their own site, and are limiting inventory to their top dealers (like The Ready Store and Nitro-Pak).

....

They're working overtime to meet demand as best they can, but I sensed they are concerned about their ability to do so if this spike doesn't abate soon. I asked both Mountain House and The Ready Store if the new demand was coming from a particular sector or new buyer (e.g. a military contract). Their answer was no; both observe that it's caused by a groundswell among general consumers who are increasingly concerned about the economy and future stability. Nitro-Pak's website statement appears to corroborate this.

So what does this mean? First off, what this is *not* is an all-out shortage. No one is thinks it's time to panic here. Perhaps this demand spike will dissipate soon. Unexpected surges in orders have happened before (though not of this magnitude), and things eventually returned to normal. Orders are still being filled, just more slowly than before.

But the combined suddenness, intensity, and unforeseen nature of the demand is unique and worth noting by the prudent individual. And if it persists - or increases - current prices and availability may be at risk. Hence this alert: if you've been planning to start or add to your food stores with pre-packaged offerings, you should consider accelerating your timeline.

Stocking your pantry isn’t that difficult. Store what you eat, eat what you store. Rotate your food, eating the oldest first.

We mark the month and year of purchase on the cans, boxes and jars.

You don’t need to buy freeze dried food from a supplier. Stock up on the things you actually use when it is on sale.

And learning to can, dry and freeze your own is a very good thing to do. Here is a link to an article by Jackie Clay from Backwoods Home magazine, about building and stocking your own pantry. http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/clay125.html

It was by reading Jackie’s articles that I got the courage and knowledge to use a pressure canner, to can low acid foods like vegetables and meats. High acid foods are canned in a water bath, and I had been doing that for years.

Well, as we all know, Y2K was a fizzle...

Thank the legions of computer programmers, both PC and mainframe, who spent many a day fixing the programs to not crash when the century changed. A someone who worked a whole year on banking programs I can attest that without that work all hell would have happened.

It is an example of how we can address a problem, if we recognize it in advance and actually plan for it. Not the stupid stuff our government(s) does today.

That’s a great magazine, been reading it for the past couple of years. I bought all the supplies and books for canning but I have not had the courage to do it yet.

Can I mail you when I’m ready to try this next summer if I have questions?

Yup, saw it on a duplicate thread.

Well, Michelle keeps saying American children are too fat.

That won't be a problem much longer.

>>But I think some of it people are preparing for the coming inflation also.<<

Part of the Bernanke plan is to convince inflation is just around the corner, causing them to buy stuff.

It’s working with me. I buy a lot of junk silver.

We have done exactly as you say. We took money from investment profits and bought cases of canned goods, big bags of flour, sugar and brown rice. We bought what we normally consume.

We have very good cost records and are treating it as an investment rather than emergency stock. Given the anticipated inflation, the investment yield should be significant. It is portfolio allocation diversification

>>There was a piece in USA Today a few months back about the wealthy buying underground bunkers at a record rate.<<

I must confess, that if I were forced to stay in a suburban area, I’d seriously consider that. But I just bought a farm in rural Kentucky instead. And I can grow more than just mushrooms there. :)

The downside (BIG downside) to this plan was that you needed to GET TO these bunkers in the first place at a specified location.

Not an easy task if everyone is hooping in their cars at the same time.

(Not to mention they cost about $5 million or so if memory serves)

The biggest “fear” I have, regarding my Kentucky property is that when the SHTF I am not there, and it would take multiple tanks of gas to get there (not possible).

It is not a real fear, however. It has been clear from the git-go that the Lord has something planned, regarding us and that property. Too many “coincidences”.

Ok, but why would this be happening with food? Someone out there is talking to family and friends and building a case... has anyone heard it? In short, what’s the word of mouth?

Yes, I actually read that a couple weeks ago. Very interesting stuff. And not really all that surprising if one understands human nature.

It actually brings up one of the basic differences between conservatives and liberals. Conservatives think that man is basically evil, hence our need for salvation to spend eternity in the presence of our Savior. Liberals think man is basically good and therefore believe a purely communist world of mutual love, respect, and sharing, unhindered by private property rights, etc. is the true utopia that evolution accidentally afforded us.

You can see the difference in the way both sides respond to events and government actions.

I know there is no problem, because they are still using corn for fuel.

The Government wouldnt do that if there was a problem./s/
