Kids are getting high on a common household spice - nutmeg

TAMPA, Fla. - There are new concerns for parents, as a common household spice is now being abused by teenagers to get high.  Video of kids smoking, eating and drinking large quantities of nutmeg to get high can be found all over YouTube.com.

According to various online reports, Nutmeg contains Myristicin, a compound that can cause euphoria and hallucinations. Potential side effects from getting high off Nutmeg include: vomiting, dizziness and convulsions.

When shown some of the YouTube videos, random people on the street were shocked to hear this was happening.  "What other kind of seasoning could you possibly try to smoke or sniff?  What else could they get their hands on?  It's kind of scary to hear about that," said Emily Felgenhauer.

A small amount of nutmeg in your recipes or on top of some egg nog is not harmful.  Users consume the spice in high quantities to feel negative effects.

But because most homes have the spice in a pantry or kitchen, it's easy to obtain, and has become an easy target for those kids attempting to get high.

....but this was a 2-year old fragment, and I didn’t want to waste it.

That's how I was brought up - not to waste anything, but I do because if it isn't used in a couple of years, chances are, it's never going to be used again.

Not exactly a spice used a lot. Who'd have thought?

Right! So, under the Nutmeg Precursor Act, when you go to the store to buy nutmeg, you'll have to sign a form (that will be turned-in to the state of course) giving your name, address, and SSN. This way, every can of nutmeg you buy will be tracked. If you buy too much, BAM!...Your busted baby!

So that’s why I always feel good after several cups of Egg Nog...and all these years I thought it was the booze I put in it :)

The booze might be a necessity right now (to kill the germs). I just found this recall notice:

Mylanta and Nutmeg products recalled

Snip Wednesday, 01 December 2010 11:00 : Also in the world of recalls: nutmeg: If you like eggnog, make sure you take special care when adding the spice. In response to a recall commenced by its supplier (Mincing Overseas Spice Company, Dayton, New Jersey), Frontier Natural Products Co-op, is voluntarily recalling two products manufactured with non-organic nutmeg that were sold under the Frontier brand and under the Whole Foods Market brand listed below that contain nutmeg supplied by Mincing Overseas Spice Company. The nutmeg has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Oh just GREAT! Now the DEA, FDA, and all other gub'mint agencies will make cooking a lot more troublesome no longer allowing my pumpkin pie and other tasty dishes to use a "banned" substance!

Just when I was getting used to having stopped up sinuses 24/7, now no nutmeg because some kid who can't make change without a computer, decides to get a high on my nutmeg.

If I had kids at home and was concerned about it -—— I’d add a hefty dose of cayenne pepper to the nutmeg. Or switch labels! HeeHee!

For crying out loud. It has been known since at least the early sixties that nutmeg has some psychoactive effects.

You’d have to eat a ton of the stuff to get “high”.

This is NO threat to anyone.... must be a REALLY slow news day.

I thought the younger generations (never in my life thought I’d write that) had ‘salvia’ as their new drug.??

Ah, yes. Teenagers have discovered yet another thing their grandparents did when they were young.

Just in general, it sounds nasty.

The pie made em high.

This ought to make sales of pumpkin pies go through the roof before Christmas.

On the other hand, isn't pie restriction part of Michelle's agenda?

All we had when I was a teenager was cigarettes and beer or booze (lifted from a parent's cupboards). In hindsight, those were very good days compared to the present time. Some of the more daring kids added "something" to their coca cola that allegedly made them pass out. There's ALWAYS been a "something" for daring teens to experiment with.

Probably they go looking for anything they can get to catch a buzz.

Salvia too is an “old” drug, it’s just popular now.

Coleus is a salvia-like drug that grows in many home gardens. It will be popular, then not, and something else will be the flava of the day.

Heavenly Blue & Pearly White MG seeds...if my memory serves me tight.

But first ya had to wash off the substance they put on the seeds to keep people from doing what we/they were trying to do.

...or so I've read...heh heh heh.

Used to be this inhaler, the Benzedrex nasal inhaler, that was over-the-counter. It contained, among other things, racemic amphetamine free base. So instead of inhaling it, you’d make a foul tea with it and get wired, very very wired. There is a jazz tune, Who Put the Benzedrine in Mrs Murphy’s Ovaltine? When amphetamine went on the Controlled Substance Act Class 1 list, they switched to propylhexedrine.

Then there’s Asthmador, you were supposed to smoke these Asthmador cigarettes to stop wheezing. They contained belladonna leaves (or maybe Jimson weed), and if you made a tea, you could get a dissociative, hallucinatory high for a day or so.

People will seek out these experiences, they have for thousands of years. lol There are probably an equal number of people shrieking BAN IT! since Thag the Caveman ate some strange mushrooms.
