USS Nimitz to be stationed in Everett Aircraft carrier will replace USS Abraham Lincoln at naval station EVERETT This time next year, people in Everett can expect a send-off for the USS Abraham Lincoln and a welcome party for the USS Nimitz. The Nimitz will replace the Lincoln as the aircraft carrier based at Naval Station Everett, the Navy announced Thursday. For years, rumors have been swirling about the departure of the Lincoln from Everett. City leaders worried about a major hit to the regional economy and what, if anything, would replace the Lincoln. Now they know. I am just ecstatic. This is absolutely wonderful news, Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson said. I think Everett got its Christmas present early this year, and for me it's the best present I've ever gotten. Now we just need the Air Force tanker. The Lincoln is scheduled to head to Virginia at the end of next year for a midlife refueling of its two nuclear reactors. The refueling job is set to start in 2012 and is scheduled to be complete in 2016. The Lincoln currently is serving in the waters off the Middle East and is expected to return in the spring. When it next departs, it could be sailing to Hampton Roads, Va. Whether the Lincoln will return to Everett after the overhaul remains unclear. Stephanson said he plans to campaign for the Lincoln to return to Everett, to join the Nimitz.

This won’t be cheap.
didn’t you hear? they are gonna SAVE you money... (sar)
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said the decision to base the Nimitz in Everett followed a lengthy analysis and review. The Navy’s move ensures long-term strategic dispersal of aircraft carriers on the West Coast and saves the Navy more than $100 million, he said.
Just for general information, Naval Station Everett is located in the state of Washington.

Is that Whidbey Island? The Nimitz was stationed there, back in the late 80s or early 90s — wasn’t she?
I was stationed aboard a ship ported in Boston, back in the day. It was determined that this ship would be better home ported in Newport, RI. This ship was a reserve training Destroyer with a small crew. The total cost of moving this ships homeport and crew’s families south by a few hundred miles was something in access of 16 million. That was back in 1974, you can only imagine what it would cost today.
Gee, wonder what it will cost this carrier to relocate?
Everett is on the mainland kind of across from Whidbey Island. The USS Nimitz used to have home port at Bremerton, Washington. When I was in VA-165 we used to ride the bus down from Oak Harbor in Whidbey Island down to Bremerton to get on the USS Nimitz to go to sea.
Whidbey Island is just to the west of Everett, the carrier air wing is stationed there. CVN68 was stationed in Bremerton Wa before, (I think ) Everett is about 40 miles north of Seattle of the east side of Puget Sound

yup, sorry 1st post
Better than Phoenix.
Phoenix was probably on the short list...
Everett gets the Nimitz. San Diego loses the Nimitz with
no replacement. That punches a hole in the economy.
That's what San Diego gets from the Democrats for being too conservative/Republican.
I suspect that you are correct.
It is the narcissist's way to settle scores with political opponents, real or imaginary.
.
ya, and Washington state wins because we re-elected Patty Murray & Norm Dicks. I would rather have lost the AF Tanker & the home port deal if we didn’t have to put up with those two.
San Diego got the Carl Vinson (CVN-70) which was formerly home-ported at Bremerton, Washington.
