(CNN) - Members of the Westboro Baptist Church announced Thursday plans to picket Saturday's funeral for Elizabeth Edwards in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Kansas-based Church - monitored by anti-hate groups such as the Anti-Defamation league and the Southern Poverty Law Center - is known for its extremist opposition to homosexuals, Jews and other groups.
The church members also oppose the War in Iraq.
According to the church's website, members will hold a protest from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m.

It’s not really much of a church either...I understand it’s more like a family with most of its meager membership being related.

I’m a Baptist-—sometimes Southern and sometimes Independent, depending on where I’ve lived and what churches are near-—and I can tell you that in no church I’ve ever been associated with have they sung Ozzy Osbourne songs in the street to make a point.
I was very curious about where they got their money, the way they travel around raising hell at will.

The ACLU has been known to defend hate groups in the past-—like the Nazi’s wanting to march through Skokie IL 30 years ago-—but they generally need to be PUSHED real hard to act.
They call themselves a “church” because churches are not (so far) taxed.
They call themselves “Baptist” because there is a myriad of different Baptist groups and one more church calling itself “Baptist” is less likely to be questioned than, say, “Catholic” or “Episcopal.”
They keep it all in the family. The so called pastor, his daughter is the lawyer that does all the suing.
Phelps is a Jewish lawyer and several others who are lawyers use the church as a tax-free method of using the court system to fleece other Americans of their money with lawsuits and settlements.

I was in Topeka not long ago and had I been there through the weekend, I would have gone to the "church" just to see what their "services" were like (presuming they allow anyone other than non-family members through the door).
I did check the local Yellow Pages and, sure enough, there was a small ad for Westboro "Baptist" under the "Church" section. I surmise even this is just part of their cover to appear as if they were a religious organization, which, of course, they are not.
Yeah, I wonder if they have a “Visitors Welcome” sign out front?
If it was my loved one, I would be oblivious to them. I doubt that the lunatic ravings of a bunch of cartoon characters wouldn’t even get through to me. I’d be grieving.
